'93 4runner won't stay on

Hey guys,

I've got a 93 4runner, V6 4x4. Its got 195,000 miles on it. I can turn the car on and it runs like normal for about 10 - 30 secs, and then it just slowly starts to die. I have already replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump. Any other ideas or guesses as to what else might be wrong with it?

check the induction tube i have a 93 sr5 as well and mine cracked all the way around which starved the engine for air causeing it to die about 30 seconds after starting

Where exactly are you referring, the hose that comes out of the air filter?

Any of the ribbed intake tubes after the Afm. and check the plug on the afm.

how is exhaust flow out the tailpipe? could be a plugged/ clogged cat....

AFM is the air flow module as I understand it.

This is probably related to a sensor, likely the mass airflow sensor. Toyotas run on default settings at start up (for 10-30 secs) before the computer kicks in and starts using sensor data. This is why they'll usually idle high for a while, then drop. This can also cause your problem, as the engine is trying to compensate for a problem that a sensor detects, or a problem that does not exist due to a bad sensor.

Like they said, start with the air intake, make sure there are no holes or cracks, then check wires.

Hey no worries buddy. I have had a few toyotas and been on quite a few toyota sites and forums.
I'm not sure if there is a differance between AFM or MAF. I've heard them refered to as both.
If anyone knows post it cause i've asked a few mechs with no resonable response.

yeah check every inch of that mine cracked right next to the throttle body

Basically AFM (Air Flow Meter) is any device that measures the quantity of air going to the engine, where MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) is a type of AFM. 1st and 2nd gens use the Vane type of AFM.

as for the question, did you check the ECU for trouble codes? that is a good place to start, and like has already been said, check for vacuum leaks in air intake.
