93 AT/2WD 4Runner AT Problem

Synopsis:

I own a 1993 4Runner/AT/2WD/V6. The truck is all original with 156K on the engine and AT. I decided to change the ATF with some 75K and up ATF, but when I did so the AT wouldn’t shift in to any gear.

Steps I took to change the ATF.

* Drained the old ATF via the AT pan located directly behind the engine oil pan.
* Once drained, I plugged the AT pan and added two quarts of 75K & up ATF via the dipstick.
* I didn’t change the filter or pan gasket. I didn’t remove the pan at all.
* I started the truck up and allowed the engine to warm up.
* I shifted in the reverse and gear didn’t switch.
* I shifted in to drive and the AT shifted but I had to apply more than normal RPMs to drive.
* So, I added two more quarts and now the engine doesn’t shift at all. I don’t feel or hear the shifting and it does move in any direction.


I have no clue what has happened. Maybe the filter is clogged? Any ideas?

Did you add back the same amount of fluid as drained? It won't shift properly with too much or too little fluid.

Were there any prior transmission fluid changes in that 156k miles? Did the old fluid smell or looked burnt? If the fluid was burnt, the transmission was on borrowed time and the fluid change give the tranny its last breath.

The fluid came out black. I'm afraid the AT is bad. It looks like I'll be replacing the AT. Thanks for the assist.
