93 tint replacement question

I am the second owner of a 93 4-runner and would like to replace the shoddy tint job the previous owner did on the rear side windows. Is this possible, because I heard somewhere that Toyota already puts a light tint on those windows and if I peel off the existing tint the Toyota tint will peel off too. Making the windows look really crappy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Toyota tint is in the glass. You can't scrape it off.

using a $20 hand held clothing steamer will make complete removal MUCH easier

Right, any tint from the factory would be part of the actual glass, not something added on. Scrape away on the aftermarket tint film.
