I just blew out my head gasket in my 94 v6 4wd 4runner. I was wondering if anyone had any tips before I start. I haven't done a head gasket before so any help would be appreciated.

So, I just picked up a '94 4runner as well, was thinking about doing the head and some other odd things when I found out about the recall. I'm curious, what all is this recall for?

Go here;

V6headgasketrecall
I have heard of some dealers replacing the whole engine if they tear it down and find the block damaged all at the expense of toyota and milage does not matter.

There may also be a stearing linkage recall on your model. Give the vin number to the dealer and he can tell you.

the recall is for the head gaskets on some 1986 to 1995 toyota v-6 3.0. depending on what factory the motor was maid at between those years had severe head gasket problems. i dont know if its the actual head gasket or if its how the assembled it. but they had a ton of problems with the head gaskets.

I have a 90 4runner, bought it a month ago. Prev (original) owner kept meticulous records. I believe I saw that my head gaskets were replaced some 15 years ago. Is this problem solved?

v6 didnt come out till 88. 88 and 89 are not covered, 90-95 are. Call the dealer and have your vin ready. If it hasnt been done, they will do it.

Read the link Saved posted, it will tell you everything you need to know.

Actually there is no such thing as a guaranteed problem solved with these engines. The new gaskets can and have blown, but they are less likely to blow. If the previous owner had the gasket issue done under the recall then that vehicle is no longer covered even if they blow again. If he did it himself then the vehicle is still under the recall. You would have to take the vin number to a dealer and see, but if the vehicle is running fine I would not bother.

... don't use evergreen product's head gaskets... they are defective from the factory... i made this mistake and it sucked!
