94 4runner tranny prob.

my 94 4runner 3.0 4wd auto tranns slippes out of over drive when going down the highway and wont kick back in. and sometime it wont even shift int to over drive when you first start it up and go untill i stop turn it off and start it back up. any ideas anybody?

For the Over Drive issue its easy, overdrive is controlled by the coolant temp sensor the overdrive will not engage if the engine temp is not up to the controlled temperature you mau.

as for the tranny popping out of gear that means your not maintaining pressure in the valve body and this can be many things.
1. change the fluid the #1 failure of trannys is from bad old fluid.
2. change the filter
if both of these items dont fix the issue then your valve body may just be going bad its not a uncommon issue with the 3.0 auto tranny
 
I had this problem and it was due to the previous owner putting in the incorrect thermostat....

The overdrive is temp sensitive and if you don't allow the coolant to get to the correct temperature, the OD is weird.

My fix was going OEM thermostat. I hope it is something odd like that for you.
