94 auto trans question...

ive recently bought a 94 sr5 4runner (auto) with 177k miles. This is my first t4r so i am just getting used to it. Heres my dilemma, when the truck is cold, and i go about normal driving (in o/d) it seems not to want to shift into 4th gear for a few mins/miles. it hovers around 3k'ish rpms around 50mph then finally drops into 4th. Is this normal?? once it seems to warm up it drives and shifts fine. any help would be appreciated.

I have a 95 auto, and experience the same issue. I have checked it out on a few webistes (including this one) and what it sounds like is that this is a normal occurance on many 4runners. It happens on my 4runner fairly often as I dont drive it very much. It can get annoying driving 55 in the 65 until it warms up and shifts, but runs great after that. One thing I have found is that if I pull over and turn the car off and then on again (after it's warm), it will almost always shift smoothly up into o/d.. Good luck

Yeah this sounds normal, it won't shift no matter how fast you push it untill it gets up to temperature. If it bothers you too much put a lower thermometer in there and it will warm up and shift quicker.

Just so the info in this thread is complete, the A340H transmission will not shift into OD and the torque converter will not lockup until the engine coolant (as read by the ECT sensor in the coolant bypass at the rear of the engine) reaches a temperature of 70 degrees C (158 degrees F). It's built into the logic for the transmission.
