i'm guessing by the lack of results from my search that this isn't a common problem but here goes. i have a bad power steering fluid leak in my 94 V6 4runnner. looks like the cover plate on the back of the pump thats held on by 2 bolts is leaking. anyone ever attempt a repair on this? i really dont want to buy a new ps pump because a .29 cent seal went bad.

The rear plate has a o-ring that seals the back of the pump. If I'm not mistaken...you pull the rear plate by removing the bolts and then a snap ring....the pump will then slide out the back after also removing the front pulley then tapping on the front shaft...usually either the front seal or the rear oring you're questioning are the ones that fail.
replace both of them....remove and teflon tape the vacuum assist and the pump should outlast any aftermarket piece of junk on the market.
I try to keep everything OEM.

hey, for what its worth, i just found a reseal kit made by duralast on autozones website for $16. thats the winning ticket. here's the details if it helps anyone else out.

Stay away from the silicone...silicone will not last on the pump and if it breaks away and gets into the ports in the pump...then you'll be disassembling the entire pump.
Tap the shaft like I suggested...swap out the oring (lube the new oring and inside the pump where it will seat)...also pull the front seal with a seal puller and install a new one using the same size socket to tap it in ( before doing so though, clean the shaft and the seal area).
Its usually the front seal that fails on these, then the fan blows the fluid all over the place...I usually just swap out the front seal while the pump is still mounted in the truck.
You can get the front seal from Toyota for like $8 or so...or go the Autozone route.
