'94 SR5 CD Player+Speakers

I posted this in the Electronics section but nobody seemed to want to help. So I will put this in here as well.

I have looked through a couple of pages to prevent a double post, but I have found nothing about 2nd generation models.

I am just about to get my license and my dad's 94 SR5. I'm pretty sure the sound system is standard, with 4 speakers and the gap under the cassette/radio.

I am looking to buy a CD player and at least speakers for the front. I have my player lined up, but I am lost at the speakers. I'm really inexperienced at this, but I have a friend who is going to help me out. The main problem for me right now is figuring out how to get to the speakers. I can't see any easy way to get at them. What do I do? And also, how do I remove the factory cassette/radio system?

Like I said, I really have no idea what I'm doing but I will have an experienced friend helping me. I just need to get the right speakers lined up and have some idea how to get to them. Thanks a lot in advance!

The front speaks are under the dash panels, down by the bottom and out towards the edge of the lower dash. The driver's side is easy to get to, the panel comes off just to the left of the steering column. The passenger side is in the same place, other side.

These are small, I think 4". I put Pioneer 6x9's in the back to replace what was already there. You will probaly have to cut to make them fit in the stock place, mine was already cut (ok, not cut, butchered!) I really don't think I gained a whole lot of useable sound there...it is ok if the truck is empty and no one else is inside. I would rather put a pair of 8's or 10's back there and upgrade the front to bigger speaks somehow.

The easiest way to go is to just replace what is there with higher quality stock-replacement speaks. Crutchfeild has a sizing chart that will help with that.

Stereos are not rocket science, just think about where the speak is pointed and how it would sound. Get quality gear and install it according to the diagrams with quality wire and don't skimp on the grounds or power leads.

I really, reallly, really, really tried to figure out how to upgrade to larger speakers in the front. It's a problem with depth, not really surface area. You could possibly cut a bigger hole in the passenger side and mount the speaker and it would still be enclosed. But on the driver side, you would have to cut the box. This would mean a sound quality decrease so then what's the point of putting larger ones in. Even if you did do that, you couldn't go much bigger anyway.

I just replaced my stock speakers with same size infinity speakers. I used Audiobahn for the rest of the system but they don't make ones small enough for the front. Anyway, the infinity's just barely fit depth wise.

how the heck does one get to the rear speakers?!?! do you have to take the whole back end out?

might just be easier to go to best buy and have them install back there. at least then, they're liable.

when my friend and i replaced all my speakers, the circuit city guy said, "there are two 5 1/4 speakers in the back and two 4" speakers in the front. well we did the back first and after an hour of pulling the backpanels off, we realized that the factory speakers in the back were not 5 1/4!!!!!! they were 4"!!!! so we figured that the 5 1/4s were up front, so we put everything back together and went up front, again---4" !!!!! so we had to build custom boxes to support the 5 1/4's, which we put into the front. (that's what sucks about living out in the country 2 hours from a decent store!!!) but they work ok right now. just took a lot of patience.

Just redid my sys in my '94 ... and yeah, I don't know why every stereo shop I went to (Best Buy, Circuit City, Crutchfield) --- all said they were 5 1/4" in the back ... but nope they are definitely 4 inchers.

Anyway - all of this took only a couple hours ... just make sure to "remove the illuminator (orange) wire" from any new stereo you put in.... (or at least ask the folks you buy it from about this). I added a new Sony and fried it by not removing that wire apparently (it's an orange wire in the harness they supply with the radio). Just cut it or rip it out. Thankfully Circuit City replaced the fried unit for me.

Then I added a couple Infiniti 4" up front to replace stock 4 inchers, put another set of 3 1/2" Infiniti's in the back above the window to replace the factory tweeters ... (had to customize the mounting brackets but I got 'em to fit up there).

For the rear, instead of hacking and cutting, I picked up a couple 6x9 speaker boxes (they don't take up much room) and mounted a new set of Infitinti 3-way 6X9's in 'em. Then hooked up about 40 feet of speaker wire to each. Wire is neatly coiled into the left & right storage compartments .... so when needed (i.e. at the campground), simply grab the 6X9's and you've got a complete stereo system around the campfire 40 feet away

I helped a buddy of mine replace his ('95 SR5) factory am/fm/cassette unit w/an aftermarket Pioneer CD head unit as well as the front and rear speakers. The fronts are 4" & the rears are 5.25". They were replaced w/a set of Infinity Kappas (w/external crossovers). I remember the plastic enclosures for the front were a bit too shallow to accomodate the magnets so I made use of my Dremel tool and caulked the opening afterwards. The speaker cutout opening in the rear enclosures were a bit too snug too and I had to use my Dremel again. I also had to cut off a few tabs on the rear enclosure right next to the screw holes to get the slightly oversized Infinity Kappas in there. I don't think you would have any problems w/other speaker brands as Infinity tend to make slightly oversized models (larger basket & magnets). As for getting access to the rears speakers, you'll need to remove the entire rear plastic panels on both sides (you'll have to detach the rear seatbelts as well), the plastic trim behind the 3rd brake light (top) and the bottom plastic trim where it meets the carpet. We actually changed the head unit 1st, then the speakers. Good luck w/the install!
