Ok, I'm fixing to replace the exhaust system on my 95 Limited 4x4 auto v6 3.slow. I'm thinking the K&N high flow air filter, the Downey headers, then what? 3 inch, 2.5 inch? dual exhaust? than again 2.5 inch, 2 inch, 3 inch? Looking for the best HP upgrade, and the best efficency increase.... I know that there are folks that have done it...Thanks in advance...
BTW, one catalitic converter? none? the oxygen sensors? Any info will help...Thanks again...

Headers are probably your best bet with 2.5 inch pipe just a little larger then stock, and to keep you legal look at High-flow Cats, Magnaflow Cats have been good to me. How ever if you do put in true dual exhaust you'll run in to come trouble with the Oxygen sensor. I'm not sure if you could put in an X pipe and place the sensor in the middle and be fine or if you would have to have 2 Sensors. That's something you'd have to think about.

An 'H'-pipe is not a half bad idea, Red3. It's something we used to do a long time ago with Chevy 350's. If I remember correctly, it seemed to help the bottom end torque some , and also gave a nice sound to the exhaust.

I'm not sure if it would work for a place to put the O2 Sensor. Sure would be a nice experiment for someone to try. If (when) my 3.0 dies, I might try rebuilding it and doing headers and true duals with an H-pipe.

Thanks :) My friends chevy with true duals doesn't have an h pipe so he gets an odd noise and its not even and I'm sure he's lost a little torque. I really want to run true dual's so I've had a little time to think about what i would do. Howevery I'm not looking to experement with my only ride. So maybe someday.

The O2 sensor was what was making me think that the headers to a 2.5 inch, or 3 inch single would be the way to go. maybe the headers to Y pipe to the cat, then to the magnaflow. the first O2 sensor before the converter, and the second after... Either way I'm thinking stainless exhaust to keep the rust to a minimum.
The only real questions are DO I need a catlytic converter, and what system to get? I know that someone has a setup from header back that is already setup for the truck, why mess with it... Then should I go with a K&N or trueflow high flow filter in the standard air box, or a full on intake system to compensate for the increased out flow? if so what?

Hmm

I would think you would be better of replacing the whole intake filter side of it. Why spend money on a factory highflow replacment filter, and then have to spend more money to replace that with a high flow kit. Just do it all at once.

I can't say that you should take your cat off, due to legality. How ever you only need it if your state has emissions testing.

I think that if you could move the O2 sensor to the location of the H pipe you would be good, I doubt it would matter all that much.

Red,
Arkansas doesn't have emmissions testing, heck we barely have motorcycle drivers testing... It's basically a formality to raise revenue....

If I remember correctly, and it's been about 20 years since I've had a car without a cat..... The thing just restricts airflow, and inturn Horse power... Right/wrong? what are the advantages of removing it, and the disadvantages..... It wouldn't really be removing it.... Just not putting it back on. It's improved HP, and fuel economy I'm going for... So the more airflow the better right?
Probably just get the headers, O2 Sensors and take it down to the local guy (Bill's muffler shop) and let him do the exhaust... after explaining what I'm after.... I'm sure he will make the best it's going to get.

Your correct in terms of efficiency all a cat does it restrict your exhaust. It gives you some back pressure that's about it. I'm not sure how much back pressure you should maintain, or if a lack of back pressure is damaging to any thing. How ever cats are only there to meet emissions testing.

Hmm

You need some back presure for the engine to function. I'm not to sure how much, as I just bought a yota and haven't made it that far. As far as the cat goes, It helps to burn off and filter that rotten egg smelling stuff. I would think moving the o2 sensor down the exhaust system would foul it up, and cause it to send bad signals, that is why it is closer to the engine, so it gets ahot reading instead of a cooler reading.

Yep I'm thinking that the headers, the y-pipe, the high flow cat, the high flow muffler and out the back... I'm sure Bill can handle that pretty easy.... Oh, BTW 2.5 inch pipe all the way.. And the K&N Cold air intake... That should get me just about all the added HP, & fuel eco that I'm going to get from the 3.slow... and still keep it running good for a while. I'm going to keep my eye out for a wrecked donor for the 3.4L swap though. I'm sure that I'll have a couple years to get that though...

Oh Yea. Forgot I just wanted to thank everyone for there input... The input of others helps when deciding how to attack this type of upgrade...

I was going to get the Cat with the O2 Snesor Bung. As far as the rest of the mandrel bends in the pipes and stuff.... I'm going to leave that up to Bill (@ Bill's Muffler shop). I figure I'll buy the Downey parts back to the cat, the Flowmaster Cat, the flowmaster muffler and leave the rest of the system up to Bill to bend...

1 last question: After getting a very rough estimate of how much this mod will cost.... I excess of $1300.... What kind of MPG improvement should I expect to see? You see at this point the 3.slow has enough HP to do what I need 98% of the time. I know that thoughs who have done this already are very near to the 200 HP mark, up from what 150-ish. But what kind of fuel economy improvements have you seen? 5 mpg, 7 mpg, 2 mpg, -5 mpg? This will be the factor of weather or not I actually do it. Thanks again.

I'm really not sure about HP gains or MPG gains exactly. I would expect you to see mild gains in HP at least a little more pep. MPG I'm not sure I would imagine you would see a decent gain in MPG although I'm not really sure. Maybe someone else can give you a good estimate or speak from experience.

Well, I spoke to Bill (at Bill's Muffler) and I'm getting the Magna flow Cat, and Muffler & 2.5 inch stainless pipe from the Y-pipe back installed for $360. Bill figures about 180 - 195 HP (up from 150-ish), and about 2-4 MPG improvement... I guess 2 MPG on a what 20 gal tank gives me like 2 extra gals per tank full. And at $360 it sure can't hurt any. I'm not going with the headers right now. I received the K&N drop in filter, and noticed some slight increase in pep already. I'm guessing that the new exhaust after 195K miles can't hurt any.... So either way I'm still ahead of the game I guess. I'll post some info later... The new exhaust system goes in thursday.

Those numbers sound about right. Also with that K&N drop in I'd do the Intake Silencer Removal. It adds a little more pep.

The silencer removal is definitely something to consider. I'll see how the high flow exhaust goes, and let you all know...

OK, So Bill (the Local Exhaust shoP) Put a 2.5 inch Flowmaster Cat on right at the Y-pipe, and I think (He said he was going too anyway) put the O2 sensor right between the Y & the Cat. Then 2.5 in stainless about 3.5 feet of it the a Flowmaster Standard 40 then 2.5 in stainless tail pipe and the 2.5 inlet - 4.5 outlet chrome tip...
Here's the results:
1. The 3.slow sounds like a 1972 L-88 corvette. Sounds very sweet, but way to loud. I have 800 watts of bass, and it screws with it. It definately sounds like there is a well tuned V8 under the hood. The 18 - 30 year old crowd would love this thing. sound like a riced out chevy small block. (I'll try to record some Sound data and Post it)
2. Lowend Torque beyond compare. This thing is a low end monster.
3. However, at 70 she's about done. There is no topend get up at all. It will get up to 70 with the best of them. I even got the 4high 4 wheel barker out of it with the 31x10.5 Dueler H/Ts made marks with all 4 of them at the same time. But at 70 I matted it and got 80 about 10 seconds later... It was crapped out at 70... I'm guessing that there is to little back pressure at the high RPMs.
4. With that in mind, At 70 I normally run about 3K RPM before the K&N Drop in, and the exhaust. Now I'm about 2.5K to 2.6K at 70....This may be a week O2 sensor maybe? It may be that the O2 sensor is dirtied up from 12 years of use, or just plan worn out after 195K miles.
That's the results... Now the next step. After, doing what I should have done in the first place, Calling Flowmast Tech support. They are very helpful folks. You tell them what you have, and what yoou want and they will tell you how to achieve it... SO I called Bill, and told him that that 40 was just to much interior resonance for a middle aged guy to have going on. Then that I wanted to replace it with a 2.25 in stainless from the cat to the muffler, and a series 50 delta flow 3 chamber 2.25 inlet/ 2.5 outlet. He said that he had told me that it was going to be loud. I agreed and explained that I was pretty stupid, and did not mind paying him to for my stupidity as long as he was not punishing me. He said fine, that will be $75 for the muffler, 2.25 stainless, and the work. I said that sounds like a great deal, and if he were to Saw-all the muffler I could probably sell it, and recoup alittle of my stupidity. He said fine, and 1 week from Monday he would be ready becouse he had to order it, and would be closed all next week anyway. Bill is like semi retired, and s pretty good guy to I would say.
The guy at Flowmaster said that no matter what you should never go with anything bigger than 2.25 on the 3.slow 4Runner becouse it needs some back pressure, and any bigger will release to much. He also said that the header were only needed if you were going to be pulling stuff, or 4x4, or crawling or like that. I plan on driving to and from work mostly with some additude ,the occational trip to the dump with the trailer, or hauling my bike or tractor on a trailer. He said the same about the full cold air kit. He said the drop in K&N was some pretty serious intake flow. I'm replacing the O2 sensor as well. I'm also going to ensure that the MAF Door is functioning well.
I'll get the results out when it's done... of that..
