95 4runner running slower than normal

hi guys
I was reading posts earlier but I still feeel I need to post my issue with my truck.
I know that the 2nd generation 4runners are slow but mine is even slower than the rest. My problem started a few monts ago. I was drinving home one night when my truck completely stalled. No matter what I did I could not get it started. I had it towed for service and was told that my timing belt had cut. Anyway after the belt was replace a noticed that my truck was a little bit slower than before. 2 weeks later I had to take a drive on rt 280 where I had to go up this hill and I could nt get the truck to go above 45miles per hour at 3000 rpm. To make matters worse another 2nd gen 4runner went right past me as i was stuggling to go uphill. Last week I went in for an oil change and the next day it seemed to get even slower. I had to drive to work today and I can barely get the vehicle up to 60miles per hour on a flat and level grade. I drove about 30mins to work and not once did I get above 60 miles per hour. When I step on the gas the transmossion downshifts and rpms increase but my speed still remains the same. Has anyone had this problem before. I need help asap.

When you say "you step on it and it down-shifts, and engine rpm increases, but speed remains the same." Do the rpm's keep climbing as your speed remains the same? If so I would stick to the torque converter or tranny. But if it does speed up "slowly" in time with the rpm's going up, that would rule out the torque converter and tranny (more than likely). Another possibility if it's slugish all the way around, it could possibly be build up in the cat, not letting the engine breath....

Keep posting, as you make progress trouble shooting it. I'm curious to see what the problem is.

I have parked it because it I have not had the time to check it yet but yes it is very sluggish at all speeds . At the lights, when I accelerate from a full stop the truck barely responds. It takes approx. 30 seconds to get up to 25 miles per hour. Also I believe that it is very slowly accelerating when I downshift but I don't feel comfortable driving around at 4000 to 5000 rpms so I usually let off the gas whenever it downshifts.

I'm thinking of starting with the catalytic converter because the truck is slugglish at all speeds and if I'm not mistaken I can feel the slight shift when the torque converter kicks in at around 50 miles and my rpms drop to 2300. Also the converter is a whole lot cheaper to replace and if it does not solve my problem at least i'll have a new converter.

HI,, I've been watching this forum for some time,, , gleaning some good information. I signed up just so I could reply to this thread. I have owned a 1992 4runner for about a year and a half. Bought it with 145,000 on the clock. Mine exhibited many of the same low power issues you have described. Additionally, it would sometimes buck and jerk when driving at 'around town' speeds. This occurred most frequently when starting from a dead stop. I did all the usual things : tune up, heavy doses of injector cleaner, fuel filter, O2 sensor ( was getting the O2 code in the 'check engine light' read syste),,,, but nothing worked. Turned out it needed a new fuel pump. I know,, you didn't wanna hear that. The pump itself is pretty expensive, and the labor is too. However,, it fixed the problem. Might check fuel pressure and flow before cutting off the converter.

Good luck,

That's a very good point, it could be. Also if it is the fuel pump... I don't know with the 2nd generations, (I'd check but I'm supposed to buy mine tomorrow night.) but on the first generations I found that if you unbolt the back seat, theirs an access panel with about 3 screws/bolts holding it in. You take off those 3 bolts and it leads you to right above the gas tank. Then you can take off the 4-6 screws to the top of the gas tank, and theirs your fuel pump. I changed mine out in my 85 4runner in about 20 minutes, and it was an easy 20 minutes. All the repair manuals, and most people you talk to say you have to drop the fuel tank. If you have that panel under the rear seat, that's not the case and it's much easier.

WOW, that's great , if he can get to it that way. I just had mine done at a local shop. If it turns out to be the fuel pump,, spend the extra $25 and change the fuel filter, too. It's along the inboard side of the passenger frame rail ( on 2nd gens ), bout half way back. I think that's probably what did mine in. The previous owner likely didn't change it soon enough and it wore out the pump prematurely. Mine's due for a change again soon, since I've put about 20,000 miles on it in a year. I'm NOT interested in popping the $400 or so for a new pump any time soon.

if you are slightly off it will start and idle fine...it will seem anemic when you r it up and on the road...its happened to me a few times...you will find you cant get the engine past 4 grand or so...its challenging getting them lined up perfectly sometimes..

your timing belt is off a tooth... Simple as that.. Common problem w/ the 3.0 ...

I agree
timing belt, I think you said it was just replaced right?.

I also IIRC I think you have to drop the tank on the 2nd Gen. to get the fuel pump.

Yeah, I retract my previous statement. You can on the 1st gens, but I just got another 2nd gen a couple nights ago, and I didn't peel up the carpet--but it didn't look like it had an access panel.

sluggish

Replace the clutch fan and check the air hose for leaks or cracks....These are 2 of the main causes of these problems...Once the clutch fan goes bad engine will not perform and cause these symptoms..

DUDE. This thread is almost 10 years old...... make yourself a new thread or use the search function.

Dude... It just came up again yesterday. If you had been looking you would have noticed this. No sense in being a jerk about it. I wasn't on here in 2005 and I just started having the same issue and saw the thread.
