95 4runner sputters

95 toyota 4runnder sputters really bad. i had a code 52 for a bad knock sensor. but light went off. so im gonna get that replaced. could that make it sputter? i also had the same problem awhile back turns out it was a defective spark plug after they replaced the heads. im gonna pull the plugs out and cleam them and check the wires and exchange them. has anyone had this isssue? i also noticed a match smell to when it runs like that. im thinking an o2 sensor. if its the plugs whats causing it to fail? its a 95 4runner v6. thanks.

When I bought my 92...it sputtered and hesitated real bad....it also has a slight knock at certain RPM/Throttle.....

The slight knock....I think could be the knock sensor, as I'm told it basically advances and re****s timing to adjust for driving conditions, etc.

For the hesitation I ran a can of "Seafoam" through it.....quite a smoke show, but it worked WONDERS. INSTANTLY the hesitation and sputtering ceased. You take the can of Seafoam...pour 1/3 of the can down the break booster vacuum line, 1/3 in the crank case, and 1/3 in the gas tank. Drive around for 10-15 mins. Then take it home and change the oil. You'll be amazed.

check your tps.. if your problem is constantly sputtering try disconnecting the tps. if it goes away then you found it.

My 94 was sputtering really bad about a year ago. Seemed like every time I got around 3000 RPMs going up hill it would start to sputter and miss really bad. After racking my brains for days trying to figure it out it turns out I had a simple crack in the Air Intake Hose. I guess it was just cracked from age and dry rot. I opened the hood and started squeezing the air intake hose and sure enough, as soon as I opened that crack a little bit it would start to die.

So, when I was going up those hills, I think I had just enough suction to open that crack a little which would screw up the amount of air moving though the mass air flow sensor. This would fool the computer and cause it to kill the full injectors for split seconds at a time. At least that is what I think was happening.

$35 bucks later for a new air intake hose and the problem went away completely...

My '92 is having similar problems. Air intake hose was split all the way around right next to the clamp, I just taped the shmack out of it and re-clamped. Also installed new fuel filter, spark plugs, cap and rotor. It runs a bit better after getting warmed up, but still sounds like little rocks are bouncing all over inside the engine when going uphill, and has intermittent spluttering in the 2-3 k rev range. I'm going to try the seafoam treatment, I've heard nothing but good stuff about it.

also check your spark plug wires near the egr valve on the passenger side
