Hello everyone.
So I have this odd problem that only seems to occur after I've driven my 1995 4runner for a while (anywhere over 20 miles). When I park my truck, get out to do what I need to do, and then get back in to leave I'll move the gear selector into reverse or drive and nothing will happen. If I do this while I'm on a hill then the truck will start to roll as though it is in neutral. Shifting the transfer case into H4 doesn't help either and the 4wd light won't come on.
The only way I can move is if I'm in L4.
My temporary solution to the problem? Shift the transfer case into L4 and built up some momentum. While I'm moving (forward or backward) at 1-2mph, throw the transfer case back into H2, give it some gas and feel (and hear) the gears rumble and jolt back in. And voila, I'm back in business. I'll either do that or if I have time, wait about 30-45 minutes for it to cool down and then it'll work fine.
This problem seems to be temperature related because it only happens after I've driven for a while. I usually know when I've driven enough for it to happen because the metal base of the gear selector handle gets really hot. When the truck is cold/luke warm, everything works fine including H4.
Just a little history: When we first got the truck it was taken to the Toyota dealership to have the tranny rebuilt (only the tranny, not the transfer case). They outsourced the rebuild to a local transmission repair shop and since then we have came to them twice with the same issue. Of course, it was cold when I dropped the truck off so the problem could not be replicated.
If anyone has any idea or thought as to what may be happening please let me know. I'm at the point where I'd like them to rebuild the tranny (again) and transfer case but I don't really have the budget for such a job.
