I have a 96 3.4L 4x4 automatic. The code that is coming up is a missfire in cylinder 3. Before I have to spend $$$ to diagnos it does anyone have or have had this same code come up. Thank you

I'm having the exact same issue on my 96 4x4. I have been losing about half the overflow bottle of coolant every month so I'm guessing bad head gasket or cylinder head. I have checked the coil packs, spark plugs, wires, resistance on fuel injectors and they are all fine. I am also not seeing any signs of coolant in that cylinder. I'm going to borrow a buddies compression tester this weekend and check the cylinders. If it's fine I am going to swap injectors and hope that's it. If not I guess I will be tearing down the motor. Mine has 214,000 miles on it so I'm not too mad about it. If anyone has any other suggestions I am all ears.

Do you have an auto trans? Check the coolant it shouldn't be frothy. If it is STOP DRIVING NOW.

Yup, I was having a similar code of random misfires.
Ended up being the valve seats popped out on cylinder #6 and had to have the head machined......$1100 later it runs great.

I assume you're talking about the transmission fluid mixing with the coolant? That isn't happening. I'm just getting a rough idle and sputtering when I drive and CEL keeps giving me the misfire in cylinder #3 code. No white smoke out the tailpipe and not overheating either.

It maybe a slight headgasket leak. after you warm it up it runs fine correct?

If you start it cold and give it gas right away no CEL pops up?

Very likely HG.. check the #3 spark plug I bet its wet.

Just so you guys know, a bad injector could test fine electronically. Everyone posts that they checked resistance and ruled them out. Could be fine electronically but bad mechanically if you will.

Thanks for all the reply's everyone. Everything checked out fine. Swapped fuel injectors, coil packs, checked compression, etc, etc. Decided to put new NGK plug in like Kanger328 did and I'll be dang if that didn't work. The old Denso plug still looks brand new.
