96 sr5 problems with the alarm

Hey all.. So I went to the dealership yesterday hoping they'd fix my alarm problem...they informed me that I'd be needing a new fob as well as the alarm computer. I didn't buy their fob or alarm bc i wanted to do more research. I ended up buying a new fob on ebay but am now worrying it won't fix my problem completely. Is there any known wiring issues with this rs3000 that might be a easy fix? Or what's the thoughts on just buying a aftermarket alarm off ebay and using that instead? Any input would be appreciated for this dyi chick lol.. Thanks

Hi Blondie...what trouble are you experiencing with the system in its current state? We need some symptoms to offer up a diagnosis. I would NOT install an aftermarket alarm system...let us help you find the problematic part if it exists, and get the replacement from the internet. 4Runner parts are plentiful and there may be a very simple remedy! Let us know...:hatsoff:

Well The problem consists of the remote not working first off and occasionally it will work but when its on there is a good chance of it going off randomly ...this Has been going on for bout 3 years prior to this issue it would lock and unlock randomly but haven't done that in a few months past problem was the key wouldn't come out of ignition but figured that out by replacing ignition switch and still stuck with new switch but not if i remove keys fast.... Any ideas?

Problem still exists! There is an electrical issue going on here but no one will diagnose it..I've been to 2 mechanics AND even went to the dealership service and they won't look at iunless I stay a minimum of 4hrs for them to tear it apart...I'm so sick of this truck..I'm sick of the keys not coming out well scratch that they come out but only in the ACC position not in the off position..which is not goodbc the radio stays on..anyone have a direction for me to start at?

Probably not what you want to hear...but in order for the dealer to properly diagnose it they will need it for several hours. It's a risk you take of them being able to fix it or not, that's for sure. But I would rather them try to fix it than taking it to a random mechanic unless it's someone you trust and know prior.

Electrical issues do take some time to figure out and remedy. I'd hate to see you throw your Runner away (or drive it off into a lake) :lookout: all because of the alarm. Know what I mean?

Sorry I don't have any concrete info on a fix...it's hard to diagnose without seeing or being able to tear into it. Best wishes and I hope you get it figured out!

Maybe unplugging the alarms black box will tell you something?

Beside where your left foot sits behind the plastic there is a black box. Unplug it and see if that does anything.

Is there a battery in the fob that needs replacing?

Have you tried doing a search in "Google T4R Search" box? I just searched for "factory alarm" and a ton of threads came up, some of which seemed to be somewhat related to the same items you were talking about (including replacing the alarm computer by swapping out with one from a junkyard, or part-out project, etc...)

Sorry, wish I could be of more help, but i'm not to familiar with the alarm systems, as I haven't had to many issues with mine other than replacing the fob batteries.

Also, regarding the key issue, i'm not sure if thats related to the alarm or not :shrug: I remember another member mentioning a similar problem, and I think it ended up being something to do with his shift lock control if I remember correctly. When your key won't come out, have you tried shifting down and back through the gears, and then try to take it out again.

If you do a search for "shift lock", you may find some info that helps you out with that issue.

The early alarm is so simple. It should not take 4 hours to diagnose. Unfortunately, I just sold my alarm. Sorry.

The the alarm is giving so much trouble, just unplug it, Pull it out and be done with it. There are 3 set of plugs that the need to plugged back into one another but that is it. it should take less then thirty minutes to de-install.

About the key. i would try to use WD-40 and insert the straw that comes with it. Spray inside the key whole liberally. This should flush all the contaminates out of the lock assemble and lubricate it as well.

If this does not work, i have an entire lock set for sell. It includes the ignition switch and lock, door locks, rear hatch lock and glove box lock. It comes with 1 toyota key and one copy key. All for $35 shipped.
