96 t4r any good?

I'm looking at a '96 4 runner that has 86k mi on it. It's a LTD. I notice that not many people on here have the 96's

Are the 96's any good?
Anything newer shoots up in price dramatically.

I got a '96 SR5 and bought it used w/50k miles on it from a grocery getting mom w/a car loving husband. It currently has 145k and counting. My runner is stock and all I've done is oil change less than 3000 miles and the 90k service. I forget what I paid for the maintenance but it wasn't cheap. I love my 4runner and only took it back to toyota to do the 90k maintenance and when they had a recall on a coil spring. I havn't even needed to change my brakes since I got it(though its coming.) My only complaint other than the stupid front cup holders is that at highway speeds the wheel seems to shimmer a bit (even after a balance and alignment). I think its the rim itself. But IMO one can buy a reliable car w/a bad previous owner and not be happy. My first car was a '94 civic and it had 220k miles on it b4 my sister who while visiting totaled it I might have cried. haha Two years ago today oddly enough.

I need to change out my suspension but am waiting to get an Old Man Emu 3" lift.

Oh and I wish I had the limiteds fender flares but I wouldn't want the chrome bumpers

It is a good vehicle. They did have head gasket problems, they were different than the 2nd generation head gasket problem. If the 96 had a problem it was in the first 20,000 miles. I would not have a problem buying one of them now.

As far as not having too many 96 owners here, we welcome them in the fold, but a older 4Runner forum has more 96 owners. You may want to check out yotatech at:

That site may give you some feeling about 96 4Runners before you buy. We still want you here too, but a little extra knowledge can never hurt.

I have a '96 and not a single problem since I bought it and I already put 10k on it. I bought it with 115k miles and it's running great.

I have a 96 4runner that I bought in 2002 from the original owner when it had 64k on it. Of course the guy did the regular stuff except the 60k maintenance. That cost about $1200. A few years later I had to put new shocks on the front. I wanted to get the 5 speed because I have a 4000lb camper that I pull with it in the mountains. I haven't had any major problems at all and I have about 87k on it. It is a great rig. I had a 1990 4runner with a v6 before and i cant believe the horse power difference. I would buy another one if i had to.

My dad got a '96 SR5 in 2000 with 81K, and I drove it for five years and put over 100K on it before my brother inherited it. It now has 206K, and nothing but regular servicing has been done to it.

I love that car. I miss that car. I now drive an '01 Limited, but I think if I could go back to the '96 I would do it in a heartbeat. Especially one with under 100K!
