96 to 99+ Center Console-Lid Only

There's countless threads about swapping out the entire center console from an older 3rd gen to a 99+, but can a person swap out the lid only from a 96 to a 99+?

I don't want to swap out my whole console (I've learned to live with the crappy cupholders) but I really like the split lid of the 99+ consoles. Is it a direct swap, with the hinge and latch being the same, or does a person have to swap out the whole console for this lid?

Anyone do/try this already?

ive actually got a 97 sitting in my side yard right now... and my console lid in my 02 is all fubared up so when i get a moment ill run out and check for you.

I tried it and it doesn't fit or work very well.

1) There are 2 plastic 'fins' on each side of the new lid that need to be shaved off so that it can close all the way down. This issue was solved

2) The latch doesn't engage properly, so I swapped the latch from my original lid and added washers as spacers to get it to fit as best as possible. It engaged OK but it was quite tight. This issue was only somewhat solved.

3) The BIGGEST problem was that the lid hit the rear cupholders when I opened it. It seems like that 99-02 center storage was taller giving more clearance to open the lid without hitting the cupholders.

I guess it would become annoying if it didn't fit/work right.

And I guess it makes sense about the cupholder part, being that the new lid has storage in it, it would probably be higher hence hitting the cupholders (I've never checked to see how close the lid I have now is to the cupholders as-is).

My rear cupholder is from a newer runner (not sure what year-got replaced by insurance) but I can't imagine the clearance would be any different between the two styles.

I just figured it'd be handy to have this, could run my iPod to this sneaky spot if it was an easy swap. To the glovebox it goes!

You're welcome gptoy96. I was able to make it work decently until I ran into the cupholder problem. I gave up there, but maybe some washers to lift the lid up more might help clear the cup holders?

Perhaps, with the potential problems I'm not going to go out of my way to find one now, but if I stumble upon one cheap I might just try for the heck of it.

Since my cupholder is not from the correct year anymore either I wouldn't know if my problems would be typical for anyone else.

I have a bad habit of not doing enough research ahead of time and wasting money (hence the set of brand new ebay 2wd springs in my garage right now for my 4wd runner, lol). This site has helped me many times since not make those same mistakes.
