97-3.4l MOTOR REBUILD

Any suggestions on rebuild kits, head gaskets. Just bought this 4runner and never have built a yota. Thinking about going 20 over, are there any performance cams made for this motor?

Do you know what you're working with yet? Why the rebuild? What kind of condition are the cylinder walls in? How about the journals? It's hard to give advice if we don't know what you're working with.

It has 235k on motor, it smokes and overheats and topend rattles, have not pulled heads yet.

What color smoke? (Blue or white)

Is it burning coolant or oil?

Rebuild kits ... You can take the heads off and have them resurfaced, do a valve job ect... But it is pretty costly unless you do the work yourself.

You can buy a whole engine with decently low miles (say 120k) for $1500 and swap it in yourself. Considering you have 240k miles, a swap might be a good option.

Blue smoke, I do my own work will have heads rebuilt and planed, will have block boared and decked. I build motors and cages for our rally cars labor is not an issue just never did yota parts before, so I guess Ill use the normal gaskets and bearings.

Can you bore the cylinders on my motorcycle engine? Its a twin, so less cylinders! :bravo:

Look into LC Engineering for your rebuild kit. A little pricey but quality parts. As I'm sure you know, no point in boring the cylinders more than you have to. I'd take it apart before ordering the kit to see what you have. I'd think going .020" over would make it run a little hotter than you'd like.

Top end rattle is usually fixed with a valve adjustment though.
