97 4runner power radio antenna help

Ok when i bought my 4runner it did not have an antenna. its just a hole LOL. ok anyway i was wondering where can i buy an antenna like does it have to be a certain kind. like 97 4runner or just toyota in general. I want a powered antenna BTW but if not i would go with a normal 1. And also how do I install it? Please post links for both questions.

This is a loaded queston.....LOL. IF you have the antenna motor intact on your 4 runner and it works you could use just the mast. IF you buy the complete antenna motor, you will have to go in the fender well to replace the old one and run the antenna cable back to the radio which is a chore.....I hear.

So this is what I would do......I would go out to my 4 runner and just turn the key on.....not start it and listen for the motor in the fender well. Then I would turn off the key and listen for the motor. I rarely hear mine upon cranking up, but I do hear it when I shut the motor off.

If you hear it run, you might be able to replace the mast and be good. The mast come with directions, or do a search here and you will find some.

unfortunately that's only if the power from the radio to the motor is still intact AND connected to the correct wire on the head unit

Is the black rubber boot still there? Or is it missing looking like pic below?

thanks a lot man. i just checked it and it winds up and down. well u no wat i mean it winds and winds. then when i shut it off same thing

mine looks like normal but the antenna part is missing. i have that chrome ring. but when i look down the hole there is no part of the antenna or whatever. anyway i have the motor and shit. i just need the mask according to that guy above

Mast - correct. you'll want to take the ring off and feed the nylon teeth in with them facing the windshield I think it is - be sure to google around for correct orientation of the teeth.

So you turn it on like the antenna should normally be going up, then turn it of to engage the motor to start sucking in the nylon teeth - best to do with a friend that can do the power control while you concentrate on feeding it in.

DO NOT try to force the lower body of the antenna into the housing - if it wont slide in look for little metal nubs from crappy manufacturing on the mast.

If you try to force it down, you'll push your motor down too low on its mount and wont be able to get the ring to screw back on.

My auto antenna broke, and got stuck mid-way. I replaced it with the non-auto antenna, and the tacoma whip antenna, and I love it!

The auto antennas are annoying and are always going up and down, even when you are listening to a CD. The standard antenna assembly comes with a removable metal antenna mast, and is only $36 for the whole thing, or for another $30 you can get the badass whip antenna.

And yes, it is a PITA to re-route the antenna wire back to the radio. What I had most problems with is removing the fender liner, and Toyota's Damn clips! I ended up having to rip them out, and get new ones.

ok my friend has the same 4runner as me. the auto antenna works perfect. i dont no wat u mean by going up and down all the time. cause that does nto happen. anyway imma get the powered OEM 1.

If you start replacing the mast and it won't go in properly it may be that the old nylon track is broken off and inside the antennae motor. If this is the case you will need to go in through the fender, open the motor and remove the old broken mast.

This happened on mine.

Mine had remnants of the old nylon mast track in the motor housing. You can't put a new one in if there are bits and pieces still inside (you can't tell without taking it apart either) without risk of busting the motor housing internals as well. Be careful!

mine just took a dump today as well... i hear the motor running but the antennae isnt moving... i searched for this taco whip mod and it seems fairly easy.. i just dont want that HUGE antennae sticking out all the time.. can i replace it with a tiny nub one that screws on??

any help/feedback is appreciated.. thanks in advance
