'97 4WD - sticking reverse and/or drive problem

I have a 97 4WD 4runner that has recently begun sticking when I shift from into reverse and/or drive. By sticking, I mean that the vehicle won't go until I apply significant gas and then it pops and lurches forward. The problem is worse in cold weather, but is rapidly getting worse in general. Lately, reverse hasn't been as much of a problem as drive. Any ideas?

check your trans. fluid level and its color. check it while the engine is running and the fluid should be red not blackish.

fluid is mostly red with a little black to it. dark reddish I guess.

Also, I should add that in the past, the lurching problem only happened when the car was first started up. But now it seems to be doing it more and more just when starting from a stop (even when I'm already in drive).

was your fluid low? i would either drain n refill your fluid or go to your local dealership for a tranny flush DO NOT go to a jiffy lube type of place. you might also want to change your diff fluids and tcase, toyota recommends every 15k miles u change your diff fluids
