I went to look at a 97 Runner at my local Toyota dealer last Friday but was told the car was being worked on by Toyota. I asked what the problem was and they said a blown headgasket. It had a little over 96,000 miles on it. So, it appears that it is still happening in the 97's. They told me it would be just fine when it comes out of the shop, yeah right. It blew the gasket for a reason and who knows what other internal damge might have been done.
I own a 1998 Runner Limited (4WD) with 53,000 miles on it. It is a great vehicle and so far, not one problem. I bought it for my wife but I plan on taking it away from her and buying her a 2000 or up Runner without the 4wd feature. I just like the looks of the 98' and it came with a JAOS full front bumper/light guard already attached.
