97 Fog lights

Hello Everyone.

My name is Alex and I'm a new member here.

From reading some posts I see there's a knowledgeable bunch here and I'm hoping you can help me.

I just recntly purchased a 97' 4Runner SR5 5spd. The truck is great in every aspect except the cup holders.. but anyhow, thats sort of irrelevant.

what I'm having a problem with is getting the fog loghts to turn on..

I turn on the main lights, flip the fog light switch, the switch lights up, but the fog lights don't.

I've checked the bulbs and the filaments look to be intact. I tried looking for a fuse or a relay for the fog lights but I was unable to find it. Can you guys help me out and let me know what I should check next?

probably a fuse.

where did you buy it? if its a dealer, take it back and have them fix it.
 
I got it from a private owner...

Where would the fog fuse be? I checked the fuse panel under the hood and by the drive side kick panel. I couldn't find anything labeled with "fog"
 
sorry, mine didnt come with factory fogs, and even if it did, they were different in 97 so I dont know.. hopefully someone will chime in.

you could always ask a stealership's parts dept where the fuse can be found.. just say 'i think i may need to replace it, can you tell me where to find it so i can come in and buy a new one from you?' :arrow:
 
If they are the dealer installed Hella lights they only turn on when the headlights are on (I know you said they were on). If the light for the switch is on the lights should work. I would replace the bulbs for starters, the bulb should be 5. each. Not sure about the fuse. I have some contact info for a dealer that carries the fog light stuff for the 97 4R. I will post the info for you just as soon as I look it up. I would guess that since it is a dealer option the fuse would be in the fuse box instead of a in line fuse like after market fog lights.
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I took the truck to my mechanic and he found a bad ground for the lights. They are now working perfectly.
 
Glad you found the problem :). Just thought I'd add something to the thread since I just finished tackling this problem on my 97 as well.

There is a fuse & relay between the battery and the drivers side fender. My fog lights did not work at all until I discovered that my relay had completely rusted apart (very strange since there is no rust anywhere else). Anyway the only part # on the relay is 4RA 003 510-8. After much searching on google I found HL87106
which is the corresponding american part number. I ordered it from them, put it in, and presto fogs now work :)

I just found a NAPA replacement Fog Light relay for the '97 4runner 3rd Gen.
Part# v13172-AR294

So, I simply must reply to this.

I am a dealership employee. Parts department specifically. I have several years working with GM, Volvo, Mercedes, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Infiniti.

none....let me emphasize NONE of them can provide what you ask.

It simply isn't part of our catalog. The catalog is designed to work for/with the technicians who have their own reference materials. If a customer calls asking for a fuse location, I can tell them where the fuse blocks are (not which fuses are located in which block or anything more specific). It'd be wonderful if we had that much information but I've never worked with a brand that did. (Including the small amount of Ford parts I've sold too).

Further...a fair amount of parts department personnel work on commission, So calling them and taking their time when you have zero intention of spending money with them is counterproductive to them, and ultimately in this specific endeavor, a waste of your time too. (Unless Toyota does provide information this specific, but I've got the TSRM for both my trucks and use them for reference instead).


On the topic of this thread, I've got a lit up switch, fresh bulbs, and I can hear the relay next to the battery clicking when I cycle power. That should rule out fuses, next step is chasing/fixing the grounds. Unless I'm missing anything? Will the relay still clicky click if there is a problem with it?

There is a fuse by the battery like the picture. The relay operates off the headlight circuit if hella wired it correctly.

Some of us had harness with the two red wires in the wrong location. You know if this applies to you if the relay kicks as you plug it in with the headlights off.

I installed the Hella Micro DE version in mine. Everything was in fuse box in the engine bay. Plugged in the factory stalk with fog switch and viola. I didn't like you couldn't run the fogs without the head lights and that they turned off with the high beams, so I re-wired that so the fogs operate as long as the parking lights are on and can be switched on/off as needed from there.
