97 Limited 5VZFE OverHeating Issues

Added a thermostat to the truck once again to try and get the heater working for our trip to Nevada. Went ahead and installed a newer (Toyota brand) thermostat, after she overheated. Thought it was a faulty unit got another we tHought we found the problem.

A faulty unit but that waznt the case after two separate thermostat and without one she runs perfect but the second I go to add one I have the issue.

Any ideas? Really need to run the thermostat for winter time it's getting colder!

When you say "overheated", did it actually boil over or just run warmer than you're used to? What is the actual temperature it reaches?

I just replaced my thermostat and am measuring about 190F, which is actually a bit cooler than I'd like. But since the thermostat seems to be rated at 82C, then 180-190F is about right.

Overheating with a thermostat, running fine without? Sounds like a headgasket failure to me.

Do you mean a coolant thermostat or a heater control valve?

Cuz whether you have a thermostat in there or not you'll have heat if the heater control valve works correctly.

I am sure it could be your radiator. How old is the radiator? If it is more than 10 years old, replace it.
