97 limited high miles

Hello all,

I've followed this forum for a while and read a lot of GREAT info since I have been in the market for a 4runner. Well a friend of mine that has owned this 4runner for only 6 months is in a tight spot and needs money so he is selling it. Its a 97 limited with the 3.4 v6. Its in AWESOME shape and was previously owned by an old couple who purchased it with 40k miles. Its got 165K miles now which is the only concern i have. Ive test drove the vehicle and looked it over really well. No dents, interior is MINT, the engine is quiet with no knocks or pings, it doesnt smoke or leak anything, drives nice and shifts good. 4x4 works great. It does seem a little sluggish when i accelerate and the gas pedal is really stiff but i figure it is due for a tune up, new throttle cable as well as cleaning the throttle body and MAF. Ive talked my buddy down to 3800 and for what im seeing on craigslist these days for this kind of truck i think its a decent deal. Like i said the only concern i have is the high miles. I have the car fax of the truck and its got a great record with regular dealership maintenance performed. It states that at 116,000 miles the timing belt was "Checked" i dont know if it was replaced or not but seeing how the car has 165k on it i figure it had to have been done. My friend has changed the oil twice since he bought it and thats it. If it needs the timing belt done i have another friend who has changed his on his tacoma recently so Im pretty sure between the two of us we could get it done. I guess i just wanted to see what some of you guys with more 4runner experience think? Is there anything else I want to look for before I throw down the cash? Does it sound like a good deal? This car is going to be a daily driver for my wife for about a year then it will be my toy. Thanks in advance.

Hey man, that is ok, that is the way they ride (stiff pedal, and sluggish acceleration). A tune would would make it smoother, but really, i just hit 236k on my 98 4runner, and it's the same generation. These are known to go to 500k easily. I picked mine up used at 194k 2 years ago. I don't regret that decision one bit. I literally just drove it from Houston to LAX and back for the last two weeks. Not even a hick up.

Do you know if the 4runner your friend is selling a awd? or 2wd?

I purchased my 96 with 163k on the clock. I wasn't worried as I have the maintenance history and the belt was replaced. As for the pedal, mine isn't stiff and as far as sluggish, it does well for what it is.
If you aren't positive if the belt/wp were replaced, then I would do that first and maybe update some of the bushings etc overtime to make it "like" new again.

For $3800, I'd do it if the body is in as good a shape as you say.

Yes its a 4wd and it has the E locker rear end. Cosmetically the truck is immaculate. No dents at all and only a few minor scratches. Limited with leather interior.

Ok i found the last dealership this truck was purchased from so i contacted them and found some more info about it. The maintenance dept claimed the they recomended before it was purchased to have the following replaced but was not performed....
Timing Belt
Water Pump
Valve Cover Gaskets
Plenum Gasket
Front Oil Seal
Rear Main Seal
Trans Cooler Hose
Drive Belts
Air Filter housing

I have a friend that would help me with the majority of this stuff but the front oil seal and rear main oil seal worry me. How difficult are these to replace and what do you guys think? Maybe this deal was too good to be true. I gotta make up my mind by the end of the week.

$3,800... Are you friking kidding me? Run away!!!

P.S. Can I have your friends phone number. Never mind, just give me his address. :driving:

Even needing a rear main oil seal? I know you have to drop the transmission and im not gonna attempt that. Stealership just quoted me 1000 to do it and a mechanic i know quoted me 550 total to do the rear seal.

It sounds way harder than it is. Dropping a trans can be done in a hour and a half with a jack and no lift.

I just bought a 98 with 280k on it, and needs the rear main seal changed, for my wife. I paid $3500. If that one came across me, I wouldn't have stopped to think about it. That is a steal at that price if it is in the condition you say it is.

:jk: I'm not really in the market for another... for now.

I'm just saying that I paid $4,000 for my 1999 SR5 (2WD) WITH 218K. and thought I got a good deal. Perfect condition with zero rust. Wouldn't have hesitated to pickup yours; even needing some maintenance. Mine doesn't even have the sunroof.

Thanks guys. I come from a ford family so the mileage worried me. Im also thinking that the rear main seal may just be a suggestion from the STEALERSHIP due to the mileage. Other than oil loss how can i tell if it even needs a rear seal? Im pretty sure of the valve cover gaskets needing to be replaced due to a bit of oil around the back of the topend but if i dont have to mess with the rear seal i dont want to.

Go for it! I purchased my 97 limited with 182,xxx back in May and have no regrets. Yes it is 15 yrs old and will have some minor issues but that's what makes owning it fun.

Do you mean Kms?

How many 3rd gens do you know with over 500,000 miles? I've seen a couple posted on this forum and others, but I think the overall age of the 3rd gen fleet is such that very few of them have gone that far.

Valve cover gasket can be done on a saturday morning with a 10mm socket and and 10mm wrench. The gasket set is 35.20 at autozone, I did one for a relative recently.

And like the above said, a rear main seal is not that bad, they charge you up at the ass due to dropping the tranny, but if you have a few good friends, its nothing you cant tackle.

Well i went ahead and bought her. Here are some pics. I found a little bit of rust under the rubber door seal on the back two passenger doors in the same places. Doesnt look too bad but just curious what some of you would suggest is the best way to treat or at least HALT this rust. Under the truck is solid, no rust at all. Well let me know what you guys think. Thanks a lot of the advice.

Before you replace the valve cover gaskets, make sure the V/C bolts are tight. They're notorious for becoming loose over the years. Also, I thought my rear main was leaking as well, but it turned out my valve cover gaskets were the cause, and after I replaced them, there is not a drop of anything.
