97 LTD head unit / amp set up. plz help a newbe

Hi guys,

Haven't had a Toyota vehicle for quite a few years now. After going through a few Hondas and Mazdas I'm completing the full circle I just got rid off my 05' Mazda RX8 (awesome car) and getting a 97 LTD from my buddy.
I'm planning to put and descent CD player in it, as his head unit is old and skips when hot. He tolt me that 97 LTD has a head unti and an AMP separately. So I'm trying to figure out if I should run the CD player into the amp or straight to the speakers. I was around the block a few times in car stereo world, but I know nothing about 4 runners. Any one knows what the impedance is on that LTD amp? 4 or 8 Ohms? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

all i know is if you buy an aftermarket sterio you have to byopass the stock toyota amp. i had that problem when i was installin into my 97 limeted too. the problem is all aftermarket sterios have internal amps so in essense your amping it twice. what happens is any time you change the station or the source, you get a loud pop out of the speakers. it was driving me nuts so i took it to a guy and he buypassed the toyota amp and wired up my sub for 30 bucks. im sure he just snipped like 2 wires and was like imma get this guy wh doesent know and charge him for it. but its prefect now so i dont complain. bes of luck to you. wish i could be more help, but im not sterio inclined to much

ya, when i replaced my stock hu, i tore out the old amp with it, its mounted right below and behind it. just run the your new hu straight to the stock speakers, unless you have an aftermarket amplifier.

Does my base model 2wd 4cyl with factory cd player have an amp? I am going to upgrade my head unit and add a set of subs and amp and was wondering if mine had a factory amp.

Possible. It's a little silver box in the dash behind the radio. To bypass it all you do is unplug the 2 plugs going into the bottom of the box and there you have your standard toyota harness.

I was thinking of getting the same set up, 12w7 and 500/1 Does it d oallright in your truck. Is it over kill or not enough or just enough. I want something that makes your nose hairs vibrate and takes your breath away.

It is pretty banging if you ask me, especially if you have it in a ported box. You could use either a 500/1 or 1000/1 on it... I chose the 500/1 because I didn't have enough room for the 1000/1 with the setup I was going for at the time. My stuff is actually for sale though if you are interested. Everything is less than a year old.

750 + shipping. It is in a ported box built to JL audio specs on their website.... I'm located in NC.
