97 SR5 clutch problems

I think I posted about this a while back but making a new thread.

My clutch pedal has been sticking to the floorboard. Started last winter but its been parked for a while and I haven't had time to mess with it.

I messed with it some over the weekend. I adjusted the connecting rod on the back of the pedal and it seemed to help some but not totally.

I noticed if I'm driving, put it to neutral and hit the brakes, it will occasionally drop to the floor.

Also, when parked, engine running, and in neutral, if you bump the clutch it will continue to the floor like its being sucked down. Its not actually engaging the clutch, just sucking the pedal down.

I can find a leakage of fluids from master or slave cylinder, but I assume one or both are bad.

How do I test? or do I simply replace both and be done with it?

they are both wear items and is pretty common for either one to go out. id replace them both if one went out. thats a easy common fix

Usually a sign of a bad master cylinder. If you replace the master the slave should be replaced too (its cheap) Use OEM and take the time to check your clutch spring and properly adjust your clutch per FSM

I bought a MC from NAPA and it has been working fine for two years. make sure you bleed the slave properly. Takes a couple times to get all the air out. I had to adjust my master-cylinder push rod multiple times to get it exactly how i wanted it.

The FSM gives you a good estimate of where it needs to be at the start but as you use it after the bleed, it will need more adjusting.

As was stated, both are super easy to replace and not that expensive.

Thanks guys. Guess I need to buy some parts.

Found the FSM online. Had to get the first gen Taco one to because the 4Runner one I found is from 2002 after they MT went away.

I'm going to update this just in case someone finds it in a search in the future.

I replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders today. Pretty easy job. Probably took me an hour maybe 1.5. Cound be done much faster if I did it again. Access to the master cylinder is the hardest part. Also had a little trouble getting the hydraulic line threaded back into the MC.

Slave cylinder is straight forward. I would recommend using jack stands to elevate the front for doing the slave just to give a little more working room but I managed ok without them.

Also recommend some safety glasses! Dot 3 fluid burns like crap if it hits your eye!

Seems to have fixed my problems.

ETA: I ordered Aisin OEM cylinders from RockAuto.com for like $70 delivered.
