97 Suspension

I just talked to Toyota Service and they want $1,200 for shocks and struts on my 97 4runner. I can handle rear shocks but I have this impression that struts are too complicated for a weekend mechanic. Also, what shock/struts do you recommend?

that seems like a lot but i could be wrong. i got my rear shocks replaced at les schwab because if you don't know those can be a pain in the butt but i paid 125 out the door. And the thing rides awesome now.

If going to stick with stock height Bilstein HD's, Other people like Tokico or even the Monroe SensaTrac. The Fronts are pretty easy to remove since they mount more like a shock then a true strut that ties into steering. The concern is the spring popping when you take it apart. You will need to get a spring compressor (Usually can rent from local Auto Parts store). If you are careful and pay attention you can do it yourself. Hint for the back shocks they are hard to access the top nut and especially since you live in a wet snowy area might have rust. Start spraying with PB Blaster, WD 40 or Liquid Wrench type product a week before to help it go smoothly.
