97 T4R deck won't play burned cd's

Hey everyone,

I'm a recent T4R convert, I made the plunge and sold my beloved W8 Volkswagen and "lucked out" buying an amazing 97' T4R it's a 5 Speed, with the e-locker, moon roof, leather, V6, and to boot it's low k's......

I love it but I'm having issues with the deck, I have been burning cd's off itunes just the same as I did in the VW but the deck in the truck spits out the cd....

I've tried a few times with different brand discs, included CD text, not included it etc....

Question is, do the 97' T4R's read burned cd's?

I don't know, but I doubt it. Napster wasn't even founded until 1999. Most CD players weren't made to play burned CD's back then, and some that were had their lasers get weaker as they aged and lost that ability.

If you really have a '97 stock HU, I'd junk it for something up-to-date, iPod compatible, USB, front aux, satradio. I'm on my third HU since '99 (counting the stock cassette deck which didn't last to the afternoon of the first day), and I'm thinking it's time to upgrade again.

I hope that isn't true! I'm spending next week driving my new Surf home from BC, and if it doesn't play burnt CD's, then I've got literally 4 disks to listen to, and no radio (different spectrum in Japan)!:crybaby:

It is the age of the deck that is the problem. You have to burn your music at 1x speed to get it to work. Technology has left the cd deck behind haha. I had this same problem and fixed it by burning at the slowest speed possible.

Mine did the same thing. Some of them worked, others didn't. Time for an upgrade. :naughty:

A lot of times those older CD players will only read the reflective type of CD-R's, not the colored type (like the all black ones). My 4Runner reads the reflective burned CD-Rs fine, so I'm sure it's probably just the type of CD you're using. I doubt it's write speed, as you don't usually start encountering errors with that unless you're writing a lot of data to a CD.

FWIW my 99' CD Deck has handled two different types of burned media.

One is a memorex brand CD-R with a blue label burned at 48x.

The second is a staples brand CD-R burned at 48x with a silver reflective label.

No problems so far
