'97 to '02 fuel injection

putting an '02 in the '97 and just out of curiosity what makes the fuel injection incompatible? thanks!

I won't be picking up the 2002 motor till next week so I don't know what it looks like but looking at the old motor it looks like either just the injectors or the entire intake manifold can be swapped, which is the way to go?

What part is incompatible? If it's just the injector connectors- just re-pin the '02 injector connectors to your '97 harness. Then you won't have to use old injectors.
But maybe that's not the issue, since you mentioned the intake mani.
Your question is a little strange; you ask why it's not compatible, then you talk about swapping injectors or manifold. It sounds like you already know why it's not compatible, yeah?

make no mistake, im way over my head here but im giving it my best and learning from this site.
all I know is everything i've read here says the throttle body and injection have to be swapped....if im mistaken and the '02 fuel injection will be just fine on the '97 im ecstatic! the less I have to swap to get her back on the road the better! thanks!:rockon:

You will be pretty much swapping everything from intake manifold up onto the other motor. Just make sure everything from the new motor matches what is on the old motor.

To clarify this- other than the TB- what's up from the intake mani to swap?
And what changed on the newer TB? Is the intake mani itself different, or just upstream of the mani?

If it is a 2002 4Runner engine, the throttle body will be completely unsuitable, as that year was throttle-by-wire and your ECU can't talk to it at all.

Also, the injectors are different in '97, so you have to switch the injectors. The exhaust manifold may not match up to the single cat style cross-over pipe. The cross-over from '02 for sure won't mate with your exhaust system.

One is drive by wire and one is not. You may not have to swap the manifold. From reading lots of people doing the swaps with JDM motors people just swap the manfolds over with all the parts.
