98 4 Runner Auto to Manual conversion?

Hi, I just bought a 1998 4R with 200,000 miles on it. I'm advised the automatic transmission will last a little longer, but I'd like to have it replaced before it gives up the ghost. My interest is in having it converted to a manual transmission. Is this even possible? Is it a terrible idea, that is, would it cost several times the price of the vehicle (around 5k)? thanks!

It would cost you about 5K in parts, time and labor. Better off trying to find a stock 5speed instead of getting involved with a project like that.

How so? The transmission i see all the time are $250 on craigslist with the T-case, i dont think it would cost $5k more like $2k in parts, but i feel if he has to ask the question he isnt up to the job for it.

There is a thread like on the next page with a guy doing this too his 4 banger.

that's why I wrote that, it's one thing to do the work yourself but if not good luck talking your local mechanic into taking that job. A normal shop will charge you $1500 to install a water pump and Rad, imagine they would charge to convert an auto tranny into a manual(with parts)...
