98 4Runner 2WD 3.4L what year engine will fit?

Howdy folks. Its time tpo replace the faulty engine on my 98 2WD 4Runner. What years on motors are a direct bolt in where ALL of the computer connections are correct. I live in So. Calif. where smog tests are a normal part of life, so I need to make sure its a plug and play deal. I understand that 96 to 02 will bolt in, but do they also have the same computer connections/sensors?

If motors are same, you should be able to swap over all your sensors/electronics.

All3.4 truck and 4runner motors will fit,save yourself some hassel and get a used one 98 or newer(CA smog can be a bi%$h)

I have a 99 4runner and bought an engine from a 2002 4runner. I hear that the blocks are the same but 2002 used throttle by wire and intake was different from 99. I'm having a hell of a time finding a mechanic willing to do the swap for me.

The exact type of problem I want to avoid. Are you saying that your 99 intake manifold will NOT bolt onto the 2002 motor? Any idea what year they went to drive by wire? Where did you purchase your engine and for how much. Junk yards in my area want from $1,000 to $1,500 for a complete motor. I don't know how good these prices are.

I believe 2002 was the year they started using the throttle by wire. As for intake I'm not sure of exact reason why it will not fit. Maybe it has something to do with different fuel injection system used. Someone posted information when I first started to enquire about engine. Search under halo32c and I'm sure you'll find it. Finally found someone to replace engine on 4runner this week, so I'll post any problems found. Also my engine came complete with fuel injection from donor 4runner, so you may not see this problem. Engine was purchased from a salvage yard called LKQ and was purchased for a little less then $1,000. Motor didn't cost me that as I picked up this engine on craiglists for $650. Guy needed the money so he sold it to me for cheap. My donor engine has about 110,000 miles on it and looks very clean. Well good luck on engine search and price doesn't seem to bad at your local salvage yards but it all depends on miles and if other car was maintained. I got VIN number off engine block and actually ran a carfax report to see if all was well maintained.
