98 4runner 4wd not engaging

Hello all, a newb here.

my 98 4runner won't engage 4H, no light, no sound of engaging nor any errors.

I've heard about problems with actuator, costing $2000+ or the hose problem, or simply (or is it not simple) a jammed actuator.

During last summer (about 4 months ago) it worked FINE, I was really happy with it pulling a boat from boat launch pad, (they are slipperly you know) but all of sudden, it stopped working one day... until today.

Not that the snow is here I really need to use 4H but I really do not know where to look first.

I am not a auto mechnic, but I have knowledge in tools and cars. If it's not very complicated, I can probably try few things myself before heading to the service. any suggestions on where to look at?

ps - I haven't check if 4L works or not, but I am suspecting that it wont work either unless the mechnism is totally different. in 4L, I can feel the torque, but never really drove enough to see if 4WD was working or not. I'll check on this tomorrow on the snow.

Any help is appreciated.

Moshb,

Try locating the computer motor for the 4wd drive. I know that in the later models it is located under the glove box behind a plastic cover. Once you locate it, try disconnecting the leads for a few seconds, and then reconnect them. This worked for my 06 4runner. Just a thought.
