98 4runner 4wd

i just got my truck 2days ago and took it to AAA they told me to change the shocks. so i went online and try to find a guide. in this video the shock for the 2002 4runner has the shock and the spring together as one unit. so i was wondering is 98 the same as 2002 or is the shock and the spring separate.

ps does 98 has a light under the hood because my 4runner dont have one.

I don't have a light under the hood, I changed my shocks last night and they are separate, I bought 2 Rancho RS5000's from Sears.com for $79 shipped to my door and they are amazing, well my shocks before were stock and broken and the new ones have a lifetime warranty. Old ones in the pic, search RS5000 in google to see my new ones.

The fronts may be shock inside spring, I don't remember though. The rears have the spring and shock separate.

the fronts are struts so ya the shock is inside the spring, now those are realllllyyy hard to change out i beleive

do i have to take off anything to get to the shocks other than tires

Just pull your tire off, loosen the top 3 nuts on the shock/strut tower (do Not remove center nut) and then remove the bottom bolt. You are going to need a spring compressor in order to remove the shock from the strut assembly.

I just picked up mine too. In Houston, TX for $3k, 178k miles, 2WD Limited. I have no need for a 4WD here. I guess mudding would be a cool hobby to get into but drums and guitar keep me pretty busy. Oh and a wife and five kids...
