98 4runner problem

Hi all... Ive taken the ole car to a few auto shops but none yet have confirmed the problem. Any insight is appreciated.

98 4runner 6 cyl limited. This low pitch hum possibly a whining noise occured about the same time I needed to replace the bay 1 oxygen sensor. The sensor was changed but this low pitch hum type of sound continues and it is slowly getting louder. This noise only happens when car warms up (doesnt happen when the engine is cold or the outside temps are cool) and when the engine idles down to stop at a stop sign or to pull into a store of some sort. Sounds similiar to power steering problem but does not happen when i turn the wheels. Any suggestions? All fluids are normal and look good. Belts and hoses are less than 2 years old.

Im supposed to be taking a trip across country but now I may have to change plans or sell the car and get a new one.... ugh!

Alternator?

My 98 started to whine a few months ago and it ended up being the alternator that was going. I believe the whine was from the bearings going bad.

Robyne--

How old are the drive belts on your Runner? Could be tensioner pulley or idler pulley whining. Just had this problem on my 4th gen & it sounded just like a power steering pump going out...it would whine with a rev of the engine.

Hopefully this helps...& I hope it's an easy fix for ya. And welcome to T4R!
