98 5vz-fe loud tapping/knocking advise needed *video update*

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Howdy Folks.

Lurker need's some help on finding a loud tapping/light knocking sound coming from my newly purchased 1998 4Runner for my soon to be, first time driver, son. A little back ground on me, I am a former automotive tech with lots of skill's (or so I thought), lots of tools and a shop at my house. I have a restored 1980 FJ40 and the wife drives a 05 Sequoia LTD.

I bought this REALLY clean 1998 4Runner with 178,000 miles cheap from a used car lot becuse of this engine noise. The car runs great with good power, no mis fires and it did NOT overheat on the 30 mile drive home. I have no service history on the vehicle other than a sticker under the hood indicating that the timing belt was changed about 6 months and 5,000 miles ago and a super clean motor on the inside, more on that later.

The noise doesn't start until the engine has been running for a few minutes. The noise is a very loud ticking, nearly on the verg of being a knocking sound. It sounds like its coming from towards the rear of the engine about in the middle or a little towars the drivers side. It sounds like its coming from above the rods and below the valve train. I Know, its weird. The noise completely goes away at 1,000 rpms if I put it in gear and load the engine. In neutral if I raise the rpm's the noise is still there, but a lot less.

In the last two days of owning this thing, this is what I've done thus far, in this order.

1. I pulled the oil pan, screen and windage tray. All 6 rod bearings were tight in every direction. I pulled one rod cap and both the bearing and journal looked great. The crank thrust looked good. No obvious signs of problems. There were only 6 flakes of metal in the bottom of the pan and no sluge or signs of abuse or neglect.
2. I inspected 360 degrees of the flex plate and seen no visable signs of cracking, from what I could see.
3. I pulled both valve covers and measured the valve clearance on all 24 valves. All valves were within spec. All cam lobes looked great as did all gears. No obvious signs of problems.
4. I made sure the timing belt was timed correctly.
5. I changed the oil and filter to 10W-30. I cut the filter open and found another 6 flakes of metal in the filter media.
6. I put the engine back together.
7. Performed a compression test and found all was good.

The only thing left to inspect is the pistons, wrist pins, small end of the rod and rings. I know this series of engine can be a little noisey, this single tick is more than that.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to check before I pull the thing out and blast it apart?
Is there any guru's that you know of on this series motor whom I could ask their opinion?

I could get a used engine and install it, but this engine (and vehicle) is SOOOO clean inside and out and well taken care of that I hate to replace it. If used is the way to got, where is the best place to buiy used?

Thank You in advance for your help

I'm not super familiar with these motors, but maybe you have a bad lifter. I have had this problem in the past with one of my cars, but normally it happens the other way around. Its loud at first but quiets down once it has been running. Thats all I can think of off hand. It sounds like you have checked everything else.

I don't question your troubleshooting, but there is a vacuum related box on the drivers side that gets noisy in some of these trucks. I'm not even sure what it does, but there was a user on here a few days ago with a similar sounding problem and thats what it turned out to be.

Sorry I'm not more help! Hope you find it!:thumb3:

Thanks FoneRunner. I went out and checked the noise and its not the evap box. No noise at cold start and then appears after it gets up to temp.

Hm, sounds like the exact same thing Qyota and I are experiencing, but louder.

Sadly, neither one of us knows what it is either.

I will say.....if it doesn't change with RPM, and it goes away completely when you are driving....I wouldn't stress about it too much. If you have time to keep troubleshooting: great! Post the results of what you find, and I'm sure it'll help alot of people. I think this is a fairly common sound...but with varying degree's of loudness. Your's sounds pretty loud from your description.

Yeah, if it was just a slight tick I wouldn't be too concerned, its just to loud to be a good thing. I'm gonna unbolt the torque converter and see if the noise changes or goes away. I will disconnect the drive belts next if the torque converter doesn't reveal the cause.

Thanks for your input.

I inspected the flex plate again ans still don't see any cracking. I wonder if someone could have put head gaskets in this thing and their the incorrect ones?

I found a guy who posted a video of his 5vz-fe that sounds close to mine. When he did his HG's, he didn't know that one of the cams has a clock spring inside it. I remember seeing the split cam gears when I had the valve covers off. I'm hoping this is whats wrong with mine, I will try and get one valve cover off tonight to check the pass side cam. This would be cool if this was it.

CRAP!! I just got done pulling the valve covers again to see if the exhaust cam gears were clocked correctly and they were. Back to sqare one, damn it!!! Once warm, it sound like a light rod knock, To bad when I removed the pan I didn't find anyting wrong. Man I was sure hoping I was going to find the timing gear springs incorrectly clocked. Whats even odd is the noise goes away when I put into gear and raise the rpm's to 1,000 and the motor sound normal. Any other ideas?

Does your knock tempo increase with RPM?

If not, it's like everyone else's....and you just have a loud one. Start checking stuff that is vacuum related if you've got more time to troubleshoot. A million people are going to love you if you figure it out. Well, maybe not quite a million....

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the noise is RPM dependant. I'm gonna be pissed if I take the motor out and apart and don't find anything wrong.

Oh yeah, I also killed one cylinder at a time on all 6 cylinders to see if the noise would go away, the tap/knock sound never changed.

Since you mentioned the cam gears, is there any chance a service bolt was inadvertently left in the spring loaded gear. If a service bolt were left in place resulting in excess play between the gear teeth, that could cause the noise you're hearing at idle.

NTORACN, you're amazing. You seem to really know your stuff. Anywho, I have faintly heard a knock, but goes away when I'm crusing. I know this doesn't help, but just wanted you to know you're not the only person who's heard this.

I wish!! No service bolt left installed in either cam.

Thanks

I wish I was amazing enough to find this problem! LOL

I know I suggested it before you put the clip up, so I'm not just saying this out of convenience....but hearing the clip now, I really think it could be piston noise from a bad piston skirt. Reason why:

At idle, and at part throttle, but UN-loaded....it manifests very clearly. As soon as you put it in Drive, it quiets a little, and then as soon as you open the throttle when you are actually driving, with the engine loaded, it goes away.

That seems consistent with a minor piston issue, or "piston slap". Could be a cylinder out of round, or more likely, a bad piston. Maybe a little piece of piston ring broke off and boogered it up. If your compression is good, it's either a small piece, or maybe the 2nd ring...since it doesn't do near as much as the top ring or the oiling rings.
