98 Fuel Pump Humming?

Ive had a hum on a my truck now for about four months. I assumed it was the alternator and just let it hum. Last night while pulling a bud off the ice he mentioned it sounded like it was coming from my fuel tank. Sure enough i crawled under and put my hand on the fuel tank and felt a small vibration and heard a hum.

Is this my fuel pump going bad? Whats something like this run? Is it a DIY?

I usually let it run about dry before i fill up. Could it be time for a filter change? Should put a can of seafoam in my tank?

The electric pump is cooled by fuel. When the tank is run low prior to filling, the pump and motor are not cooled as well.

The first thing to try is a filter change. Some pumps run noisily for a long time. If it quits, you can always try tapping firmly on the bottom of the tank. The pump will usually start a few more times.

A quick check on YotaTech did not show any DIY write ups for FP replacement. If you can locate enough information, the part is fairly inexpensive.

Be sure and carefully inspect the wiring and everything related to the pump while you are in there. Also any vent hoses that attach to the top of the tank, in case things are starting to dry rot. You don't want to have to get back in there.

Rock Auto lists the pump, a strainer, filter, gasket and relay. I've never replaced a fuel pump, but one of my fleet has 286k miles, so I must be close. Run as much fuel out as you can first, then lower the tank and jumper the pump to get more out. Working carefully (and safely), fuel pumps can be a simple but labor-intensive DIY.

Ah i`ll be running it as long as possible. Truck is running fine aside from the humming noise. Sounds like something ill let the shop handle when the time comes. Im about 7k into my 10k oil change. When i take her in for that i`ll have em check out the humming noise. Pretty sure its the fuel pump tho.
