98 Limited - Head Unit Issues

Just picked up my first Yota. 1998 4 Runner Limited. Bought it from a female owner that tore the original motor up. Body has 208k, new motor I put in has 115k.

Issue is with the head unit. For some reason I cannot get the radio to power up? Read some stuff on the forum about codes, etc. I cannot even get this thing to power on.

Checked the fuses and they are good.

Model number on tape player is 74104 and CD/radio is 58100.

Any help is greatly aooreciated!

Maybe you could just get a new head unit? Since its a 98 with all the mileage and she tore the motor up, I'm sure the radio has seen better days. I did that for my 01 and that was one of the best decisions I made.

+1 on a new hu. For under $200, can get a nice name brand unit that will sound better and have options for mp3 playback if that is something you are interested in. With all that said, i have the factory hu and amp i pulled out of my 2k limited i would probably part with. Was working fine when i pulled it out.

Have you checked for power on the black wire that supplies power to the head unit? Before you go and shell out money... make sure all your sources are working.

If you're good then yeah, go with aftermarket.

X2 on this one. Pull the head unit out and check to see if there is 12Vs going to the head unit. If it is the 6 speaker model then check the inputs to the amplifier. They should be as follows:

12V Battery(Constant Hot): Blue/Yellow
12V Iignition: Grey
Ground: Black

If they are good and the head unit still isn't working, then get a new head unit.

Thanks for all the replied...

I did end up digging the old unit out this afternoon. Checked the wires for voltage and they ended up having juice. New unit goes in this evening.

Was unsure if we were going to keep the 4 Runner so I wanted to exhaust all options prior to shelling out some money. Will enjoy the new unit either way...

Thanks again!
