'98 limited need stereo shopping advice!!

I put this in the electronics section, I hope it's OK to put it in here also. I'm sure much more 3rd Gen Limited owner's are in this forum and can help with their stereo shopping experiences...

I'd say the stereo and speakers are about used up in my 98 LIMITED.

I do not want amps, just to refill the stock holes with a new HU and speakers.

From what I've read, I should go 6.5" in the front doors and 5 1/4" in the rear doors and 1" tweets fit in the stock housings?

My past vehicles have always just had the standard HU and 4 speaker set up. How do I set up a standard 4 channel HU with the 6 speaker set up my runner has? Is there a stock amp already installed that is decent and I can reuse? Or do I HAVE to install a new amp, since it's separates in the front? Or should I just go 4 GOOD speakers in the doors and leave the tweets silent?

Looking for the most bang for my buck, but will get quality as long as the install is easy/cheap.

Thinking about this HU, because it looks stock. Worried about trouble with thieves, if I get a new shiny looking double din that doesn't remove at all...

My 97 had a separate amp, but you dont want to reuse it but rather you will likely be uninstalling it with your old stereo. Just about any stereo you buy will have its own power, youll only need amps if you want to seperate the power for the speakers or add things like subs etc.

As for fitment, just make sure its a double din. It will fit oerfectly. Get the right wiring harness for your truck and that will also take care of the speaker wiring, just follow the diagram.

Of the 2 you posted, Id go with the first one as it has a very clean, oem look. The second one is a little blingy imo. I just installed this a few weeks ago

ive got some jbl 6-1/2'' comps in the front id recommend a amp they fit great or i guess you could put in a set of 2way or 3 coax ... and the rear will need to make some adapters for 5-1/4'' speakers very easy to do

I wanted to upgrade my speakers too, but Crutchfield told me to try the new HU with my current speakers first. Apparently, at least in the 97 with premium audio, the speakers are a very unusual. For the fronts, youd have to get a different size then stock and try to get them to fit, and the rears youll have to fabricate a custom bracket. IIRC, one of the pairs may also be glued into the door.
