98 limited surging or hesitating

Hi folks this is a great forum.

My question is, I have just replaced both inner and outer rear axel seals by the dealer, and now between 80-90 km/hr or 50-55 mph there is a stutter or surge or a slip. Could the rear diff be slipping or the tranny? The tranny fluid is good and red.I have also greased the rear U joints. Any similar problems out there. Oh and yes the fuel mileage is about 15 mpg and not the 18-20 as suggested.
Thanks Ed

I had a symptom at 100k kinda like what you are describing on my 00 limited & it was odd seemed like it was only at that speed, seemed like it was the tranny, or driveline or rear end. checked everything seemed ok then it got worse & started to sound more like a surging from cylinders misfiring, replaced the plugs & wires due to a failed cylinder rpm drop test never had the problem again. what is even more odd is that it never threw a code or CEL indicating a cylinder misfire. I don't know if this is your problem but it's something to look at

surging 98

Thanks, this feels like it surges or slips at the rear, but is worth checking the plugs and wires.

Ive got a similar problem on my 96 with 150k mi. I changed plugs and wires, cleaned tb and maf, and did deck plate mod - but still get the surging/hesitating. It's a little better after all the work, but still there.

I notice it mostly about 60 mph with cruise control on. It seems most noticeable when cruise control accelerates slightly for a small hill (not enough acceleration to downshift). Sometimes it just hesitates, sometimes it stutters.

No CEL light, and I tried an obd code reader and it's throwing no codes. A friend who lives a couple hours away has a more sophisticated engine analyzer that can be used when driving. If I don't figure it out, i'll probably visit him in a month or so and see if he can figure it out.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow, to get an answer, what is the driving factor to replace plugs and wires. I noticed that the # 3 plug had a rusty color at the bottom of the ceramic and the plug cap looked overheated (brownish). I replaced the plug but stil get the stutter or slip.

Thanks to all that replied, the dealer has diagnosed a misfire at 80km/h and recommends plug and wire replacement. I have Bosch Platinum's with 38K and now do not recommend them. I have ordered NGK 2 ground electrode type. Will post a thread if all is well.

Hey 5butts - did you ever figure out what's wrong? I tried out the more sophisticated engine analyzer and it still didn't throw any codes or show any problems. Of course, I couldn't replicate the problem either. Just wondering if the new plugs and wire fixed your problem. They made mine run better, but it's still got the hesitation on light acceleration from about 60 mph.

Got anymore updates here? I have the same issue going on with my 97 Limited 4Runner. Oh yeah, I lived in Sacramento for a while but mainly lived in the Bay Area.
