98 limited, weird 4x4 issue

Have been driving a few hundred miles on the interstate lately and just noticed my transfer case lever is in 4hi.

I attempted to shift it to neutral and the AT/P light came on and it was like the trans was in neutral and the truck wouldn’t move. Also the green 4wd indicator came on.

If I shift back into 4hi the 4wd indicator goes off and it drives fine? You would think it’s in neutral?

Any advice before I start trying to figure out what’s going on here?

Also, might want to add that I recently removed the shifter and replaced the bushings. The 4wd button seems to do nothing on the side of the shifter but moving it does.

I must have moved it during that time.

I'm not familiar with the shift pattern on a 98 limited. Is it a j-shift pattern with the 4wd button on the transfer case shift knob?

Not a J shift pattern, just straight forward and backwards with the button on the knob.

So you have High-Neutral-Low for the transfer case, a 4wd button on the transfer case shift knob, and a center diff lock button on the dash somewhere? Just trying to understand as there is a couple different transfer case shifter setups for Limited 4Runner's.

Your's is different being a limited, but you don't have the "AWD" function that later Limited's and 2001-2002 4Runner's did.

Looks like it's doing what it's supposed to. I was confused when I picked mine 01 up a month ago. This thread has all the information you probably need on how it works. You're only in 4x4 when you press the 4x4 button on the shifter.

From that thread, I would assume that you could keep it in 4H and use the button to turn the 4wd on and off.

So what is the neutral position of the T-case shifter for exactly? And your saying it’s NORMAL for the AT/P light to come on WITH the green 4wd indicator when this shifter is in Neutral?

Ok, my apologies.

I pulled up a PDF owners manual and read the threads provided. So thank you both.

The ATP light coming on in Neutral is normal.

I will test out 4H and 4L later this afternoon. I think that's where my confusion was that I was getting no response from the 4wd button when on H.

I may have not seated the connector fully when i removed the shifter and replaced my bushings. I will confirm and post back, sorry guys.

All good bud. I got very familiar with troubleshooting my 4WD because I mixed up vacuum lines while doing my valve cover gaskets. Ran out of vacuum in the vacuum canister and was stuck in 4HI for a couple weeks before I figured out my goof lol

I just wanted to report it is working normally.

I couldn’t understand why the 4wd indicator was not coming on when pressing the button. So I did the wise thing and followed the manual to drive forward :smackface

Came on after that lol.
