The rear handle to open the tailgate on my SR5 4Runner will not squeeze/engage. I have toggled the door locks and pressed on the door with pressure with no results.The rear window still operates, but only from the inside switch. The external key will not work. Any suggestions how to open the tail gate beyond a visit to the dealer? THANKS!

squirt some wd-40 on that sucker. i had the same problem on my 98 limited. mine was rusted a bit. good luck. ever had any problems starting? my battery is charged but the starter seems to be very sluggish. i'm afraid it won't start in the morning. in fact i read some posts about this and went outside to shut off my alarm system. now i get rapid clicking and the engine won't turn over. i will be making a new thread of this problem.

I had the same exact problem. I took off the interior tailgate panel and found the lever/lock mechanism. It looks a little like some throttle cables I've seen, but there was a piece of plastic that came off the lever so it was just not engaging. I fixed the plastic piece that actually links to lever arms together and it worked like a charm.
