99-00 Manual Trans Reliability?

Hello all,

Coming over from the world of Tacomas and am on the lookout for a 99-00 4runner with 5-speed and rear locker.

My question is this:
How reliable are the trans/clutch on the 4runner?

I had a 96 2wd 4cyl tacoma that 2nd gear literally had all the teeth come off. It was replaced under warranty back in the day and the tech said that he unbolted it and all the teeth fell out.

05 2wd tacoma auto no problems

08 X-Runner with the 6-speed and full bolt-ons. gears grinded under boost, blew the clutch out 500 miles after SC installed (my fault) but was already on the way. This transmission is notorious for the TO/clutch failure.

So basically am I looking into some more tranny problems or should I look for auto?

I use to have a XJ that was great for offroading and I really miss it but want to stay in the Toyota family and that's why I want to get back into the offroad world. I will lift it and tires and gears and take it out in the Florida mud on the Eglin AFB range for those of you that know the area.

I have not heard of many problems (less than most company's) with the trannys. You have the occasional problem tran's have but it all depends on how it was driven before you took hold of it. You will know if its solid or not. Good getting that locker because having 4.30's pull around a bigger MT will be nice as opposed to the 4.10's in the rear end. And obviously 5vz-fe is a great motor.

The 96-00 MT V6 is seemingly bulletproof to the best of my knowledge, i have heard nothing bad about them, the clutchs last a while too but that all depends on the driver.
