99 4 runner good deal??

a friend of a friend is selling a 99 4 runner in great condition. fully loaded(leather, power everything,etc) it has a 3 inch suspension lift with a little bigger tires great condition 104,000 miles mostly highway. he says he would give it to me for 5,000. it runs smooth and everything works and it was taken care of. it sounds like a good deal to me just want to see what some of yall out there think.

Good answer. Of course you left off a few details, is it a SR5, 4WD? The mileage is good for a 99 and 99 is a good year for 4Runners. A lot of improvements were done that year. You may want to check the price on a web sites like http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/

I would have to say yes, that is a very good price.

A 4 cyl 2WD is a bit different, but I would say it should be a decent buy of course not as great as a V6 4WD. I plugged in some numbers and took a few unknowns, like is it automatic and I got these figures at Edmunds for an average vehicle.

Apart from cost I think it should be a fine vehicle, the 4 cyl models have a good reputation although they are a bit slow. Test drive it to make sure you can live with it and have it checked out. Also do a search for 4 cyl 4Runners on this site to get more info.

Not too bad a deal. There are also a ton of engine bolt-on mods for the 4-cylinder models.

There is a place for 2WD. It will get decent mileage. At 1,700 pound carrying capacity, it can carry more stuff and with 44.5 cubic feet of storage behind the back seat, which is bigger than the new 4Runner, one can take the 2WD on interesting adventures.

I guess it depends on your geographical location also since a 2wd Runner is useless in the snow but I can see one devoted to mild trails and for utility around town but for me if I'm going to deal with the downsides of a truck (handling,ride,mpg) I have to have 4wd and I actually use it.

I went out West in June of 2005 and we stayed in the Medicine Bow area of WY. We rode a few trails that had snow and well we kind of got stuck. I was able to dig out and turn off the TRAC control and I finally got out. Getting stuck in June in snow is not something to brag about.

As far as snow in Atlanta, there hasn't been much in the last 3 years. Maybe, just maybe we might have a big storm in the next few years and have 1" of snow.

I agree with you 100%, if I lived were there was snow, get 4WD, no other way to go.
