Hello fellow 4 runner gurus....i wish i could attach a short video of the noise that i took...I’m the original owner of 99 4R SR5 6 cylinder 150k miles...i noticed the noise about 6 blocks into driving, stop and go traffic with window open i can hear high pitch noise. Faster speeds is hard to hear since outside noises. When i put truck into neutral, sound seems to be a tad louder. When i turn engine off and then back on, it takes about 5 minutes to start noise again.
Mechanic thought it was the a/c compressor (haven’t turned on a/c in 3 months) but turned out no. Alternator is their next guess (replaced 13 months ago)...since this shop did replacement, they are replacing free of charge. My fear is that they’re really unsure what the issue is and replaced so I move on....I’ve listened to other alternator noises on Youtube but none sound like mine. ANY IDEAS ARE WELCOMED....I’m happy to attach video, if possible.
