99' 4R Limted, 4wd won't disengage

Hello all, new here.

This has happened two me twice. I've pulled up and backed up, 4wd shifter into all selections of 4wd and it still wouldn't come out. Finally after driving about 50 miles it disengaged.

This happened by engaging 4wd with the push button on the stick and also by pulling the stick back into 4HL. Either way it gets stuck in 4wd and will not return to 2wd.

The 4wd light on the dash contiues to flash. When you press and depress the 4wd button the light will stop flashing for a few seconds then continue flashing again.

Anyone know what the problem his and the fix for it? I imagine it's a sticking solenoid, just wouldn't know where to start looking.

same problem

i'm having the same problem it started last week and the 4 wheel drive light will not go off. Did you find out how to fix it. Thanks for any help you can give me.
 
Have had a chance to work on it yet. Just putting it off.

I did post in Yotatech w/o much success. I believe it's that front axle solenoid that is getting stuck. That's what I figure from reading through the shop manual.
 
dealership

i went to a dealership and they said the actuator need to be replaced but i'm having a hard time cuttting loose of 1625.00 dollars for them to replace it. is it O.K. to drive it with the hubs locked or is it something that needs to get fix A.S.A.P.
 
Crap! how much of that $1625 is labor? I plan on fixing it myself. How much was the part or actuator?

There must be a way to manually move the actuator to get it out of 4wd.

the Toyota dealership in richardson tx said the actuator cost 870.00 the rest was labor. i'm taking it to another mechanic tomorrow. their should be some way to get the hubs to unlock. their is two vacuum lines that either pull or push the actuator i swapted the lines and it sounded like the actuator moved but the light is still on.
 
4wd won't disengage

I had a similar problem with my 06 sport. The 4wd light stayed on with 4wd disengaged. Seems I pushed the locking differential button on the dash while cleaning the car and this causes the 4wd light to stay on.

Unfortunately that's not the problem I am having. The 4wd actually will NOT disengage whether you have 4wd selected or not.
