99 4Runner 4cyl ok for off roading?

Im thinking about buying a 4runner to do some off roading. Probably wouldn't want to do any deep water or rock crawling, just some trail blazing (or what ever its called)

What should i be looking for?
Is a v6 a must?
Does Automatic or Manual matter?

Any information would be great.

I think a lot of it is in the gearing. With 4WD lo avialable and the 4 cyl has a higher number rear axle, I would think that would be fine for what your intending. Getting on the inter-state is where you might want the V6.

We have talked about a auto or stick and I think auto is eaiser if your a beginner, but the stick has it's advantages.

In my opinion. You should have v6 just so you have more power to go uphill or up on a rock. So the more bumps there is, the more power you should get. About transmission, i agree to peter78, auto is easier to go through but manual, you can get more force when your uphill but you have to balance it very well to go through the trails or wherever your going to go off-roading at.
