99 4runner engine TEMP gauge

my engine temp gauge doesnt work~!!~!~!~ i mean it works ON and OFF~~!~!~! what could be wrong?? what are the things i should check out??

and

there are some squeaking noises from STEERING WHEEL whenever i turn. where should i get rubicated??



ps i took it to the dealer and they said the temp gauge (dash board) has to be replaced... i think itz BS~~!!~ what can i do?
