99 4runner hesitation or stumbling

i have a 99 toyota 4runner sr5 4wd, started hesitating here lately....
Standard transmission. when sitting in neutral, giving gas pretty good from 700 to about 1300 it hesitates. Then in gear, any gear, if you get on the gas too much , and it doesent take much, for example to speed up onto an on ramp, it hesitates and runs rough, jerks like the transmission would be if you were about to die out of first or something. runs fine at driving speeds unless you get on it to speed up to pass or something. wondering what this could be

When does it happen? When you first start out, or during the entire time you're driving? Toyota service manager told me Toyota's are cold natured and sometimes it'll take a couple of miles before they even warm up enough to shift right -- that after I told him mine wasn't shifting into overdrive for about 1 1/2 miles when I left the house in the morning. I also recently experienced a hesitation and jerking -- had the transmission drained & filled and that seems to have resolved the problem.

im no mechanic but fuel or air filter would be the first places i would start looking when you have engine hesitation.

That is of course if its the engine hesitating not the tranny.

Might be a dirty MAF sensor. Cleaning instructions elsewhere in the forum. Do a search.

I've got a different hesitation problem on 98 4runner limited - it happens with zero or little acceleration. Slight stumbling/jerking, kind of like going over a bad road. During acceleration it runs smoothly, and strongly; same when I lay off the throttle completely. Air cleaner is clean.

Fuel injectors? Fuel pump? I doesn't seem like the tranny, but maybe?

Its a manuel transmission....the air cleaner is clean , have not had a chance to check the fuel filter... and its pretty much all the time if ive been running for a couple hundred miles or just across town.

Check your plugs and wires. The 3.4 only uses 3 coil packs, so 3 of the plugs have wires running to the coils.

Yeah, after thinking about it, the symptoms pointed more to spark than fuel. The wire clamp to cylinder 3 was damaged - replaced the wires and all is okay.

I say dirty MAF could be one of the easiest explanations...pull it out and clean it with MAF cleaner or CRC electronics cleaner
