my runner had a very intermittent moon roof, enough that it was risky opening it for fear of rain coming in the next month with it stuck open. I found the problem in the contacts on the IC board in the overhead console. I've included 4 photos to clarify. remove ceiling console, remove 3 screws holding switch/IC board to console (don't loose the 2 plastic actuators that the switch pushes on to activate the contacts on the IC board, clean the contacts in IC board that the 2 carbon contacts inside the gray rubber boots push into. these contacts were so uniform black with build up that at first I didnt recognize that they were supposed to be copper. (see photo with arrow pointing to copper contact on IC board) this contact has rubber boot removed, see rubber boot right below the cleaned off contact, there is a contact under that boot that also needs to be cleaned. rubber boots have to little legs that set in holes that hold them in place and they lift right off. )this is from a 99 runner but other years are slightly different and may or may not have the same switch set up. nice to have moonroof 100 percent again especially here in phoenix with 6 months of the greatest weather right around the corner.
