Hi,

i have a 99 toyota 4runner ltd. it has 88,000 miles. latley when i have put it into D drive it is slipping when taking off and wont get into gear all the way unless i downshift then upshift again. It happens once in a while but seems to be occuring more often. The truck moving when in D but barely.

I had the selenoid changed but the problem is still there.

Other than that the transimission shifts fine between gears when it is driving.

Thanks

Maybe a stupid question, but did you check the fluid?? Many times low or dirty fluid can cause this.

I'm having the exact same problem. 99 4Runner Limited with about 178k miles.

aruna4, did you ever determine the problem?

well if you've done all of the above, fluid, solenoid, and shift position sensor, your pretty much at the end of it, from there it's either the valve body or a clutch packs....

at least from my experience with other transmissions, there may be a few other last ditch tings you can try such as a thick atf or some additives of some sort...

really if you've replaces all associated sensors and the fluid is clean and topped off, there's not much you can do besides yank it and open it up and see whats going on, from that point you might as rebuild the whole thing as getting it out and splitting the case and inspection pretty much a little over half the work done.....

Did the chop that drained the fluid inform you that there was a lot of clutch sediment stuck to the pan? When you pull the dip stick the fluid will be a dark gray+red if clutches are going.

Quick way to tell if it is the clutches slipping (which it sounds like) is throw in a bottle of Lucas Transmission Stop Slip. My old Ford's trans was on it's last leg slipping in every gear, dumped the Lucas in there and it was smokin tires again for a bit. Enough to get it to the shop.

My 1999 4runner limited, with 165,000, was slipping from standing start when cold. Was OK when warmed up. Flushed the transmission and refill fluid took care of it.
