99' 4Runner Mulitple Missfires

I just purchased a 99' 4 Runner. Test drove the vehicle, Paid for it. Got it home. CEL came on.

It has a slight missfire at idle, not under load. CEL states Multiple missfires. Missfire on 3 & 5.

I've read a couple posts about plugs, or Coils, even head gaskets...

What do you guys think? Dip stick looks good, no leaks....

I'm in the same boat. CEL --> Advanced Auto code pull, cylinder 4 misfire.

Mobile mechanic friend tried to isolate the issue. Move coil pack and boot to different cylinder, reset CEL. Came back as cylinder 4 misfire again.

So, I replaced the spark plugs and wires and am currently working my way through the drive cycle hoping the CEL goes off. Need to register my tag and emissions test is holding me down.

Can't nobody hold me down! :AK47:

Only thing.. I grabbed the wrong spark plugs, completely overlooked buying the double tipped plugs. We'll see.

I'd just return the spark plugs and get the correct ones.

You both need this...

notrayray, no problems yet, but that guide looks to be very helpful. Where did you get this? Part of a more comprehensive diagnostic/repair for 4Runners?

I replaced the Wires and Plugs while switching around the coil packs. Since I have not had the CEL come back on for Misfire and it has corrected the idle.

However the CEL has struck again w/ a P0171 Lean code. Since I've cleaned the MAF and it hasn't come back. Been watching my MPG and it's averaging 14-16 around town. Not great but expected I guess.. If It arrives again Iwill replace the sensor. The aftermarket part is tempting considering Advanced has been running online specials. For a couple bucks more I could snag an OEM off ebay. Hoping I don't need one at all..
